In order to utilize designs in your machine format you need a way to get the designs from the computer to your embroidery machine. Some machine you can put the design on a flash drive(aka thumb drive) and plug this into your machine. My machine has a direct usb cable connection also but you need software to send the design thru the cable to the machine. Other will have a slot for what is called embroidery cards but you need a way to put the design onto these cards. Some also read from a CD. It helps if we know machine make and model, what embroidery software you have. There are several ways to do this and some are machine specific. Now that I have totally confused you, write back with more datsa. I guarantee someone on this site has the same machine and can be of more help.
Merry Christmas.

I am one of those who needs to use a card so I use PED Basic to write the pes designs to the card that my machine uses (after the designs are unzipped, of course). :) xXx
have you looked at the design to see if it came zipped or not. Sometimes you get just the design, then you don't] have to do anything. When you download them from cute. It is just the design, not zipped.
Welcome poopoo,
I agree with Sue, probably a software problem.
In the meantime
WELCOME TO CUTIES,
Hope you find a solution,

Welcome!
Your computer probably does not have suitable software to open an embroidery design. You will either have to transfer the design to your machine which will open it or download some software such as Wilcom Truesizer which is free! Let us know how you get on.
