Bean bags was what came to mind before I read all the posts. Be cute to put a fairy star or some other embroidery design on each one maybe a different design for each child or different colors of fabric.

Kerry lovely to see you here even for a short visit. What a lucky little GD to recieve this mat. May i ask where you got it. My GD in Brissy is Tinkerbell happy. Yep and i would go with Pretty bright bean/rice bags. Seasons greetings to all . Pauline :)

Pauline, I bought it off ebay, but could have got it cheaper by doing a search on net. just type in hop scotch mat here in Aust. I just want my girls to know the sort of games we played when little, I have even collected cans to put the string on so they can walk on them I am sure you did that also. Just shows how old fashion I am I guess, but I love the old days.. the world has gone too moden on me I am afraid...with all the gagets and things...I am glad I asked as I was not sure what to do with all that is still happening in my life...still hetic.
Daughter is doing fine, read Sally's reply I put in...love Kerry

Wow!!! I love that hoppy mat!!!
As a child I'd scour the street on the way to school looking for 'good hoppy stones' or pieces of broken china, the prettier the better. Those stones and bits of china stayed in my pockets for many years.

Bean bags are the answer, of course, but you could go one step further and use pictures from children's fabric for the front of the bags - different colours and different shapes, time allowing - and I'd use dried beans rather than the smaller rice or wheat.

yes I only used stones as a child, but today we surely are more creative with our embroidery machines. And that was what I was thinking of makeing something with the sewing machine.

Bean or rice bags would be perfect. about 2-3" squares. What fun your GD will have.

We always used little bean bags. Just double stitch them so that they don't bust open when they are being played with and you will have yourself a winner!!! Great job on the hopscotch floor mat!!!

As a child we used to draw the squares out with chalk and use old polish tins filled with sand as the markers to throw on the squares. G
