I keep mine out on one of those book stands like you would put a cookbook on. I am lucky to have a big Koala cabinet so ha ve lots of room and it is very handy & saves time not having to dig them out if I need to look something up.
why not make a cover for the serger that has two large pockets one each side the foot controle and lead can be stored in the one and the book in the other, that way it is allways to hand and useing the serger it wil take no time at all.

I found pdf versions of my manuals online and keep them on my laptop. Just google the make and model of your machine with +manual+pdf and see what you can find. Most of the Janome machines are there. Here is a link to the Janome 350e. I still keep the paper versions away in a cupboard.
Thanks, I do have my pdf manual downloaded however; I need to better organize them. My manuals are located right above my machines and I am always reaching for them ;D *2U
have you seen the book shelves out of material and curtain rods? you put a curtain rod on the wall with the material on it. then you bring the other end of the material up on another curtain rod. kind of like a double rod. then you could emb. the name of the books on the curtains. you only make them as deep as your books.
I store all my documents in a wooden storage folder from that well known Swedish store. The folder is on the floor below my machines so they are to hand when required
The thick ones are in a designated spot on my bookshelf. The thin/small ones are in the case with the machine. Not very original. If I had half a brain I would scan them and save them digitally to my computer, then I wouldn't have to physically look for them.
