I keep mine in pretty baskets with nice fabric on the inside, and I have one of the baskets for each colour, all diifferent brands together with elastic band on each spool so they do not unwind. They are on a nice unit so I can lift down the shades I need, and pick out with joy,you know what I mean. Have fun what ever you choose. Hugs Pam.
I use the number conversion charts and label all brands with the Madeira numbers, because about 80% of my threads are Madeira. They are all in numberic order and it makes it really easy when sewing out a project.
I keep my threads in colours in containers/plastic boxes. I have different brands of threads and they are all happily mixed as I said by colour. All 5,000 reels are kept together and not by colour
I keep all my threads seperating the metallic, Rayon and polly cotton, all are kept in colour sequence and I keep a record in my note book of my colour nos for when I go to the thread factory. Have mostly mettler and marathon, so it is easy, since I have a colour chart with actual cotton on it showing the exact colour. Hope that helps.**
I anly use Sulky so I can not answer that question. I do have a very small box of Maderia that the Sewing machine dealer gave me awhile back but have never used any of it. I am a creature of habit and the Sulky works just fine and easy to find so I just stayed with it over the yrs. and I do mean years. I got my 1st machine in Nov of 1997.
By colours, so ir is more easy to choose the right colour
I keep mine by color, however I keep the types seperate...i.e metallics, Poly, Rayon etc.
Unlike many Cuties, I do not have a lot of threads 80-90. I do keep the brands separately and I try to keep them in shades.......
My Floriani and Metro are separated on pegboard and both are sorted by color. Each hook has a tag I made with color name and number, that makes putting them up and reordering a breeze. I can tell at a glance if one is missing and go chase the beagles and get it back... LOL It's the only part of my sewing area that's organized right now.
By color and shades (Drawer: Red and Orange, Yellows and greens, etc.
I've organized by color a few times. When the embroidery frenzy takes over, organization goes out the window. So, my answer would be:
By color with random collections of frequently used colors.
I store all brands together by color in plastic drawers (with a sticker on the outside of what color is in what drawer - but I also went with the rainbow - red, yellow, blue, green, purple, then for me browns - to help remember what is in what drawer without looking. Like others, I donot take the wrapper off the color until I use it (so almost two years later I still have some of the VERY neon ones still wrapped).
I have all my embroidery thread in Plastic Covered Art Bins and they are in order by number but when I look at them they are color coordinated.
I keep mine separate by supplier in sequence of the numbers. Having said that - I have the color charts (with actual thread monsters) of the suppliers I buy from so I work of the chart when selecting the colors I am going to use and then just take them out of the thread cabinets
I am so glad to read all the answers that keep them by color! I do that, but I have 2 friends that insist they have to file by number! I don't think I have ever turned a spool over to look! I do a lot of changing colors on the computer because I want to get the effect of what I think will look good (and I hate how DST designs are all red and blue faces). I have that wonderful Metro set, some larger cones of Sulky that I use for most utility items, some Robinson Anton that I got when I first started ME and some Coats and Clark. What their numbers mean? Nothing to ME! Linda
I have mine altogether by tones in Art closed bins, I did not open all spools. I read somewhere that you shouldnt open them, it will keep them fresher. I thought it was a good idea, also its exciting when you get to open another one up :O), its like getting your shipment all over again. Enjoy! I also bought the larger spool in only the primary colors, you tend to use more of red, green, black, purple, pink and blue. Hope that gives all you cuties some good ideas! Happy 2012
I keep sewing threads in 1 draw, embroidery in another draw, I have mini spools and have written their name & number on the top of the spool. and then bobbin fill etc in seperate draw. xx
I have mine by color and tones of that color. It helps in color selection.
I try to keep 3 shades of a color together and families of colors together and makes finding colors
easier. I keep them in a tiered rollaway type drawers. Easy to move around. Also, helps knowing when I'm running out.
By Color, easy to chose color or slightly different shade of. My colloection is growing though. Out grew my lovely wooden chest daughter gave me 3 years ago for christmas. It was made for scrapbooking to keep paper in. But it lets me stand the spools upright out of sun and dust. now have moved onto 3 plastic boxs same idea like out of sun and dust all arranged by color. Just love to sit and stitch and look at the lovely colors some I have never heard of before so they go with what ever color range it looks like to me. hugs and flowers
I keep mine all together by color. For me it is easier to find what I may be looking for. Hugs, Mary
I keep my colors together but number and identified by what brand they are.
I keep mine separate because I only have 2 kinds.
Metro's Poly and Madeira's Rayon. Since I enjoy FSL I have a tray full of bobbins wound with each of Metros color. So it easy to choose color and I leave the cones organized by number in plastic boxes away from dust, Maybe a little too many steps when it comes to choosing but it works for me.
I always sort my threads by color, saves time and when choosing your colors it is easier to find the shades especially it you want just a slight contrast color,
I suppose on how many you have, I use maderia, sulky and super B.
I keep each brand separate until I get them logged in my notepad that I carry witj me when I purchase thread. Than I put colors together so I can see which ones I actually have and what I actually need. Of course I don't think I have 50 as of yet, so I am way behind you, lol!
Diane
I keep mine separate by brand. But only because I already had my ARC thread on shelves arranged by color number so I could find it easily and got the Metro later. I put the metro on racks hanging on each side of the closet where the ARC thread is located.
If I were moving it I think I would still keep it that way because my digitizing software requires me to select colors by thread brand and then by number so that is the best way to store my thread.
Whatever method works best for you I think would be fine. If you look for thread by colors just put all your colors together like Linda suggested.

I have two thread racks and I keep all the red, blues, greens etc. together...no matter where I bought them from. Much easier to pick the right shade and compare.
I do not have enough to really be worried about a filing system, but I would definitely do it by colour. I do this with my stash of patchwork fabrics and seems to work ok.
Hi devon, I keep all my colors together otherwise I am looking all over the place for one color. Hugs sally
