Just a reminder to back up your designs in more then ONE place.

I have an external hard drive. I thought I was safe but was still in the process of moving my files. Something my daughter said awhile back made me a bit concerned. Out of the blue she told me she didn't have an external hard drive like me. When she says something like that it is usually a warning. Well, I wasn't quick enough. Now I have to see if the ex. hard drive can be repaired. The mini USB port broke and is rattling around inside the case. Weird it has never been dropped or pulled on. Anyway, great fun. Now to figure out where to take it to see whether it can be saved or not. I've researched and I hear a lot of positive answers...I just need it to work long enough to get everything off of it if they can't do a forever fix.

I had an external hard drive with all of my designed backed up on...only used it four times...I tried to back up every other month...I went to back up and whammo...I plugged it in nothing...fortunately, I had my USB sticks that were all good...So, instead of buying another external hard drive, I went out and got some 32 gig USB sticks and backed up everything again...Hope you can recover your files...

I back up with Carbonite. It costs about $55 a year in USD and is worth every cent. It even keeps the files I delete, even accidentally, so every single thing I download is there for me to go download, or restore, if needed. I can go there and delete when I want, but there is no need. It is all automatic. LIke so many others, I bought and backed up to an external hard drive and it FAILED. I also burn my files to a DVD just to be sure. If you want to know more about Cabonite, please let me refer you and I get some kind of credit! Jan

I use a laptop and back up the C: drive on the laptop AND on an external hard drive AND I backup my Embroidery files on TWO flash drives. I try to back up the Embroidery files every week. It may be overkill, but I'd rather be safe than sorry!

A few years back, I purchased an external harddrive from BestBuy, feeling secure about my designs and info I had downloaded to it. Well, a couple of months later, the external harddrive would not function at all. I took it to BestBuy to see if my designs could be retrieved. They told me they would have to send it to the manufacturer and did not know if I could get anything back, except a replacement of the harddrive. As I had personal info on it, I chose not to send it, just destroyed it. Luckily, I still had the designs on the harddrive still on my computer, as there was only two months of downloading on it being so new!! I now burn my designs to a CD, and have backup software on the computer, too.
A lesson learned, and glad mine had a happy ending!

I have a similar situation. I'm using my laptop because my main computer crashed. You can take it to office depot, staples or any good computer technician and they can retrieve the hard drive info.-it will cost me $260 for the service so I've
made due without it for now. I now have 2 external hardrives but they said these break down so should also have another backup. I don't want to do online
backup services so I guess it will be DVDS. Its a real pain but I learned my lesson.

Go to a technical guy and he most likely will be able to get it off the old to the new.
I went to PC world in the UK with this problem and it was all transferred over by them. Relief I must say, know how you feel. I save all twice, but one lot is more sorted lol

HAD THAT EXPERIENCE WHEN MY COMPUTOR CRASHED, THANK GOD I INSANELY SAVE MY DESIGNS AND MY IMPORTANT STUFFS ON MORE THEN ONE ITEM, FLASH DISC, EX HARDDRIVE AND DISC. IT HELPS. NEVER SAVE ONLY ON ONE ITEM AND NOT ON YOU COMPUTOR.

You can always retreive from a hard drive. Hope you find a good tech to help you. *

Thank You. All this because I had too much on my plate. I just upgraded my system to Windows 7 and somehow I must have click on something that made the computer do some of it's own thinking. I don't have any idea just what files are on the EX HD. I know some of the embroidery files were put in a library there, as well as my desktop. I won't know until I talk to a tech.

You are right, we should back-up in more than one place. I have all my files in an external hard drive attached to my computer and I back-up on DVD at least once a month or more often when I have just bought or downloaded new designs that I don't want to lose. Good luck retrieving the files! Hugs, Lidia

I use to but when I got my Scottish terrier puppy a year ago he became a handful and I have been doing more cleaning and mopping then I use to have to do. Let's put it this way...I've gone through 2 steam mops. I would do that AFTER regular mopping. I love him but I am so glad he is getting to an age where he obeys to some degree. Thank You for wishing me luck.

I think my son has managed to retrieve files in a similar situation, so best of luck with yours.
