I bought a shoe rack and put most of my large spools up on that. My medium and small spools are in boxes on the work surface. Not a very nice option since it takes too much space. Like the racks with all the cottons that Hitechgrannie shows. I think I will now go for that option and hang a curtain rod aboe with a curtain to cover when not in use and to protect against the sun.

My set up is a lot like keeponsewing's
I've added a couple more rows since this picture. These are my Floriani spools, my Metro I keep in Sterilite containers by colors so they don't dry out. I have to clip the ends so the kitties don't eat the thread. I've pulled out lots of wet yards of thread from kitties, which is very dangerous!

Jan - looks better than my sewing shop!!!

My set up is very similar to this, and I haven't noticed a big problem with dust. That would depend, I guess, on the environment and where your sewing room is located. These can also be made with peg board and dowels. I have a friend who made them with golf tees behind the pegboard, held in place when the board was mounted. I have no idea how she kept them in place while she mounted it. It's a great system!

I keep the threads i am using in a hairdressers style trolley it is easy to wheel over to my machine and can be put away again when I'm finished. these are sold at the cheap shops in Australia. The rest of my threads are kept in the boxes they came in, until i can find better storage

Hey Devon, I went to hobby lobby and bought June Tailor thread holders. They hold 33 spools. there are two different kind, one for short spools and the other or taller spools. I used 40% coupons. They mount easily on the wall. I have a total of 6 right now mounted across my wall.

Did you have a hard time getting them mounted on the wall too? They aren't made very well! It's fun to see how you arranged your colors!

keeponsewing by keeponsewing 16 Jan 2012

My husband used hollow wall anchors. Haha... I just threw those colors together when I switched rooms and never fixed them, but at least I can see what I have without searching high and low. hehehe...

I have a several spool holders (lie flat with the spools upright) that my DH made. I keep them in a cupboard so they do not get dusty.

I would keep mine on a shelf or pegboard, but I was told that thread left "out" will get dusty and then pull the dust in to my machine. My sewing room is in the laundry room, so that is a problem. I bought one of those little plastic drawer sets (less than $5) and it has three drawers, and holds a full collection of the 1000m sized spools.

Bass Pro shops (and probably other fishing/sporting goods stores) have clear plastic tackle boxes-about $5-6- with dividers which will hold 30-40 large spools each.

The back is peg board with dowel sized to fit in the holes. The dowel are cut to length so the spool won't fall out and then glued into the hole. Make sure you glue each on a slight upward angle. Inexpensive, you can size for your needs (hubby made mine) and it can be done in a couple of hours. Of course the glue has to set 24 hrs.

hightechgrammy by hightechgrammy 16 Jan 2012

Looks great, but I bet you have many more spools than these!

basketkase by basketkase 16 Jan 2012

How'd you know????? I have 2 store bought racks that hold 110 spools that are both full, but they don't hold the 5000 meter spools, so Jim made this one for me....

I keep mine in the plastic thread storage containers and containers that will hold the next size up like the Robison Anton. Also have a wooden spindle thread holder that goes on the wall or table.

I buy thread a lot at a time when on sale and free shipping so I need storage. I use the rollaway type carts on wheels with bucket drawers and ea. drawer
holds the colors in color familys.
We get to much dust in the southwest and I don't want sun, dry air and dust on my threads.

I have a 6 drawer chest with my snall spools. i purchased a 4 drawer storage unit on wheels to keep my large spools and my replacement spools. I try to keep my thread out of sunlight so like keeping them in drawers that close. You can buy these units at Targets, hardware stores, etc. I would buy an opaque one to keep out light.

Hi Devon
Depending on if you have wall space, this is where I keep my threads, maybe if possible you can just additional shelves to what you already have, I made this myself with my sister so it was really not complicated
GOOD LUCK

Miche
