I use Metro Polyester thread in my Brother 78OD. It works great and is beautiful. The rayon thread I bought at the dealership kept breaking; No breaking with the polyester.
I have had an old Viking Rose for many years but just now starting to really use the embroidery unit. Recently have had occassion to use Coats mercerized cotton for fsl -BFC poly for some towels and t-shirts -Madeira Rayon and Metallic for some fancy t-shirts. Cotton sewed perfectly, Poly also sewed great- Had problems with thread breaks, fraying and threadnests with the RAyon and Metallic. Silicon applied to the thread and needle, threadnets on the rayon, switching the spindle I used for the thread and my finger appropriately place near the thread spool solved the problems I was having. I am learning from all of you and from trial and error.
For embroidery I only have polyester. When I first started I didn't know what to get and I had found this site and found out what the difference was in the two and decided on poly. I have now problem with either of the brands I now have, or the metallic.
I love rayon, Robison Anton is the brand I love best. I have never had a problem with fading(yet) and have been using it for at least 6 years. Last year I did try the Metro poly and am very happy with it, great sheen, like the RA. I tried the Isacord this year and because to me it doesn't have a great sheen I used it for my fsl ornaments. My machine Janome 11000SE is not fussy, it likes all threads. I use cotton for all other sewing. Hugs..Carol
Think I will still use both Rayon and Polyester when I am looking for a certain colour.
I use rayon because I love the sheen. Also, I don't embroider for small children, which is mainly what would need to be bleached. I haven't had a problem with fading on anything yet. Of course, "yet" may be the operative word!
With my husqvarna designer 1 I used only sulky rayon, because she does not want any other thread.
Now, with my Husqv Ruby, I can use any thread. Now I buy polyester at Metro, because it is cheaper, the colours are very various, and stitch out very good
I use poly only..... because my machine just does not work right on anything else.

My brother machine stitches beautifully with Isacord but always breaks Maderia and rayon threads. I would like a little more shine to my threads, do the polyester threads shine more? *
I like the way the Isacord traps the end after use too. I tried Marathon, it was okay but did break a bit but there was no way to clip the free end after use.
I use polyester for all children's items and anything that might be bleached. It is colorfast and rayon becomes white when bleached. Ask me how I know. 8-) I bought all sorts of rayon when I first started since that's what my dealer told me to use and was the highest profit for him. Duh. Hugs and *'s, Deb
I have a medical condition and have never been able to wear polyester, so to that end I must have a mental block, because I can't use poly in my machines. I can't get the tension right. Must be psychological! So I mostly use cotton and for shine I use rayon and metallic! go figure that I am getting better at metallic. Rayon and Cotton are from plants, poly is from oil! And like meganne for all purpose sewing (seams) is use cotton with poly core. Live Laugh Download Stitch!
I love Rayon as well and really go more for the colour as my machine stitches both Poly and Rayon.
Rayon was the thread of choice for most embroiderers when I started way back i the 90's. It has a little more sheen than poly, but poly is better for kids as it can be bleached. I am phasing into polyester as I can't tell that much difference, think it depends on the project. Nan W
to all cuties : thanks for your comments. Very interesting.
I use polyester my Bernina hates rayon, it breaks all the time.
I use Polyester for all, choose it as it does not fade much in the washing of items.
Oh I bought tons of rayon because that is all WalMart used to offer when I first stated to embroider 14 years ago. And this is a little city with no JoAnns or anything to offer more . But now thanks to ,Online , I now use mainly poly. The wash thing is the main reason.
I use polyester in my brother 3100d cause it hates rayon, but can use either in my 750d & 900. Go figure. xx
I use rayon because that is what I got in my Maderia thread box but when it runs out I am changing to polyester because my sewing center says the colors last longer & the threads bread less often.
Great question. Thank you. Just love Cute as I learn something new every day.
While I was swearing at my machine last evening as it was causing me grief I was thinking about why to many questions so I knew you Cute people would know the answers. Always interesting.
I am using polyester, as it is what the sales person recommended to me as a "satisfactory and successful" thread for a newbie like me. It is also what the Brother company gives you a sample of with the machine. I do have a set of Madeira rayon and I love the sheen of it! I use it for the Disney designs for the G'babies...the sales person recommended this to me also;>) She said the colors looked more like the Disney colors! Otherwise, I know absolutely nothing about thread!!
I also have a Brother and when I bought it I was given 40 Polyester and 40 Cotton. Think I must have bought the Machine just at the right time. Have to be lucky sometimes.
I only use polyester. I want anything I make to still be around in 1,000 years like the video said. :) It is also too much trouble to keep both kinds. I think Rayon is supposed to be very shiny which I would like but just can't give up longevity for shine. Isn't rayon more expensive than polyester?

I have done some designs with both only because I wanted the colour. Where I buy from they are both the same price.
I use polyester because it is cheap. I tried some Sulky Viscose but it didn't do well at all in the wash (got very crunchy and curled up) so I'm not going to spend the money. I donate pretty much everything I embroider anyways, so cheap is best for me. I've never tried rayon.
Lyn i use polly cause i that the only thread my supplier sells in 3000
Pauline 3000m reels for $5,
pauline "polly" :)
my goodness i hashed that up, Where is the delete button??????? grrrrrr oh well you get the gist :)
Pauline. Where do you buy your thread? Have just bought some from Marathon with a colour chart -- Beautiful colours.
I get mine threads local in Sydney. I bought the color chart for $15 . Great investment, He is online and will post out. Pm me if you want more details Pauline :)
I use Rayon for anything that won't need a lot of laundering: FSL, pictures, adult clothes, doileys, table runners, pyjama pillows, cushion covers, etc.
For kids clothes and other frequently laundered items I use polyester.
For all sewing I use poly cotton.
Hope this helps.
This is very true...we never stop learning. I have also been told by my sewing center that polyester takes washing a lot better than Rayon. Colors will last a lot longer after many washings so like meganne above said polyester better ti use on items that need more washing.
My Bernina Series 8 prefers polyester, actually it prefers Isacord and I don't know why???????? It breaks rayon like crazy and most other polys I have to really play with the tension so they won't break!
Janome shops sell isacord for about $7.50 a reel of 1000m good to emb with :)
Vicki, I am not that keen on Isacord, although my machine loves it. I prefer something with a little more sheen.
I also have a Bernina and it breaks rayon all the time. I have used brother and metro polyester and have had no problem
Shirley
There is an internet site IMG Machine that I get my Isacord 5000m on sale from time to time for $6 a cone..can't beat that!!
