When embroidering monograms on towels is it best to use an embossed design?

I see Alma that you have plenty here to think about - let us know - the method that you like the most.

I like the plushness of the embossed design with a letter in them and you can get some monograms from several sites, too - with the letters that you want.

I personally liked the embossed but they did not sell well at the shop i stitch for. I don't know why. maybe we are ahead of the public!

I usually stitch a lightly filled oval under a monogram as it prvents surrounding nap to disguise parts of the letter. Did a couple of towels for a customer today in that way. Most of the time I use an oval in the colour of the towel, sometimes I do it the other way round.

I like this idea, too.
Then you stitch the ordinary font designs on the oval.
These towels look very attractive, indeed.

I've only stitched embossed designs for adults so far since the towels were for my own bathroom and they do make a statement - makes me feel really 'posh'.
All opinions are gratefully received.

Not really but usually an embossed design will hold down the nap of the towel around the area of monogram letter. The monogram letter is usually open so the nap of the towel will show through just the letter of the monogram.

A well digitzed filled stitch type of letter that has a layer or layers of understitching will also hold down the nap of the towel under the letter but not the area around the letter it self.

Yes, it has helped a lot.
I've stitched embossed letters before quite successfully but wondered if the result would be worth the time and effort to branch out with other letter designs.

Hmmm.. food for thought... I like the look of the fluffy letters so I think I'll stick to the embossed designs on gift towels since they are digitised for that purpose.
Of course, the ordinary designs would have their place, too, say on a sports towel or a 'no-nonsense,just put my initial on' towel.
