You can get a silver coloured mylar by buying an emergency fire blanket, the type you hang in your kitchen and they're in little clear bags (or at least mine were). Its a huge piece of very thin plasticy-foil, enough to wrap around a person (1.8 x 1m approx)or throw over a fire on the stove. Camping shops sell them, maybe a chemist might have them too in their first aid section..? As for the clear and opalescent types, you might only find those online. Don't use cellophane (sp?) because it won't hold up in the washing machine. But if you already bought some then you might need to make some embroidered toilet paper rolls so you can wrap them up in your new cellophane lol (uhh yep, that's what I did with mine)
Silly story: I was reading about mylar about 2 years ago while sitting at my puter & eating a packet of Twisties. I'm wondering where to get this magical product, when I look down into my chip packet and it's lined with mylar-looking plastic (or is it foil?) lol I finished my chippies, washed out the bag, opened it out & used it with a mylar design. Nice test product but I don't think it'd stand up to regular washing as the other side of the foil/mylar-like stuff is printed. lol :) xXx
I have a feeling that the gift ballons filled with helium are made of Mylar type material. worth a try if you can not see any and let us know lol how it worked.
I have not been able to get any from my local store in the UK. I have used very thin shinny fabric like voil to see what it came out like and I was pleased.I have seen it on line.
Hugs Pam.
Mylar has a lot of uses. I have a monster size roll that my husband purchased at an industrial auction. I think there is a lifetime supply on that roll!! Look around at which industries use Mylar and then you can probably find an industrial supplier where you will pay a fraction of the cost. I believe that it is used in greenhouses, among other places, to insulate. If you like the silver stuff, then talk to someone at your local store where they sell balloons. They have bloopers from time to time. Have them save the bloopers for you. Just a thought. I'm frugal, so just have to look for alternatives! Good luck.
There is Mylar and then there is gift wrap, two entirely different products. I have used gift wrap once. My daughter has an online business here in Australia and she has just listed Mylar (She got it in from USA). I have not tried it yet. Mylar costs a bit more than the gift wrap that you can get from the dollar shops. Mylar is also used in card making. I think the Mylar is much more durable than the gift wrap. Marg
In your fabric store where ever you shop for fabric

Next time I go I will be sure to ask to be pointed in the direction of the Mylar! Thanks
I know alot of people get it at the dollar stores in the gift wrap section or party supply stores. I buy mine online.
I'm not even sure they call it mylar but it is the clear gift wrap like you would put in a basket, like the overwrap. i have never seen mylar in any fabric stores where i live.
