Things which mystify me #1

Do any hoops actually measure 4 x 4 or 5 x 7? My "4 x4" isn't even square!

Those of us who digitize can answer your question as the typical sizes of frames we must work our designs in are 4x4 ,5x7 and 6x 10 . The progeram will not let you save outside these fields. So , just to be practical, we say the design fits the 4x4 frame even if it is 1x1 . That way you will know if you can stitch it in that size frame. . But it has been digitized in the 4x4 field . Hope this solves the mystery some .

So - the answer to my question is "No"! I thought as much.

It can be confusing! I have had Viking Macines for awhile now, and when I got the first one I accidently turned the inside hoop upside down, centered my design with the little cross marks and happily stitched away. Needless to say, the design was NOT centered on my item!! I went to the dealer in a huff...he made me aware of MY operator error, and pointed out that the hoop has more room in the back for the foot clearance. Hmmm, thought it looked oddly out of "square" ...So now I have put marker pen marks on the nubs for cross marks and the sizes are marked at the bottom of the hoop so I can see at a glance that I have hooped correctily. By the way, our hoops on home machines are sized for sewing field measurements, commercial machines are by hoop measurements..just to confuse us even more! Linda

Yes it is a mystery! There are times when I have digitized a design which measures exactly 4x4 (100x100) and my software program doesn't allow me to save it, where as other times it does... another mystery unsolved!

Hi Sue, isn't it the size of the sewing field? I only have a 4x4 and sometimes it will not even take a design that is exactly that size. Now I have SewWhatPro I can make the design fit, which is great. Good question. Sarah.

I first realized this when I helped smithandsmith convert designs. She was working with a "rectangular" 4x4 which was bigger than 4 inches and I work with a Brother 4 inch square (well slightly smaller). That's why you often see 2 sizes of the pes with her designs. 1 is the original size and one is reduced or altered to fit the Brother.

Thank you Sewmom for clearing that up. I have often wondered why there are 2 PES designs.

YES, very mystifying - Hehehe!

The actual hoop has to be larger than the stitching field so that the presser foot clears the edges of the hoop. There is normally more space behind the foot (top of hoop) because there is more mechanism to clear the hoop as it goes up and down.

No. The 4x4 hoop is bigger - more like 5x6 and also rectangle - but the machine will only stitch out a design that is 4x4 or smaller or, as I do it here, 100 x 100 cm and my machine refuses even a design 102 x 100 cm. Slightly larger than 4x4 designs have to be resized just a tad. This is really annoying. I need the next hoop size up for a lot of my favourite 'Veronika' designs.
But I'm lucky because my '5x7' hoop is really 6x10.
It's the size of the sewing field that counts.

Sue,

You certainly are not the only one wondering about all those hoops. It seems like all the manufacturers got together and schemed to confuse us all. :)

My Janome hoops are 140 x 140 mm (5.5 x5.5 ins), and 125mm X 90mm (3.5 x 4.9 ins). There certainly is a wide variety of sizes out there! Bev.

The size is that of the sewing field. The measurement in inches is a bit crazy, in mm there are nice round figures.

My Designer1 hoop was 100x100 mm which is slightly less than 4"x4" (3.94" to be precise), my Brother same thing.

The next size for both is 100x170mm or 3.94"x 6.77#.

5"x7" is comparable to the 130x180 hoop, which is really 5.12" x 7.09"

My EP-4 has a 110x128 mm hoop - strange size - and a 200x240 one.

Luckily Embid has a nice list (albeit incomplete) of hoop sizes for different brands, so I just stick to those - unless it's for my own use.

What is mystery #2?

spendlove by spendlove 12 Feb 2012

There are many more mysteries!
My Janome hoops are 110 x 126 mm, 140 x 200 mm and 200mm square btw.

I have wondered the same thing, Sue!

My babylock 4x4 really has a sewing field of 3 15/16. If my design is truely 4" it makes me go to my 5x7, which is really is really 5 1/8 x 7 1/8...go figure!

Exactly!

It is the inside square that measures 4 x 4 or 5 x 7 not the actual outter portions of the hoop - also depends on your machine as it my not refer to it as 4 x 4 or 5 x 7 or 6 x 10 - my Brother Hoops read 3.94"x 3.94" - 5.12 x 7.09 & 6.30 x 10.24 - but when you save your design it has to fit in that box shown on you Editor page (I use Embird) ... You have a Janome like me. That make me also wonder with the 126x110mm/ 4x4hoop *lol* I think this mix with the frame-sizes makes it difficult to digitize something and then convert it. Have seen this at your designs. The 5x7-hoop from my Janome is 14x20cm but the 5x7-hoop from brother is only 13x18cm.
Bought little ith-stuff for christmas. You could do with my janome-hoop 3 of them in one hooping but only 2in the smaller hoop from brother. Sometimes those little extra-space is a big plus for the Janome ;o)
Greetings, Bettina

From what I have heard, the measurement isn't the exact size of the hoop, but rather the sewing field within that hoop. If this isn't right, I hope someone can clear this up. I'm glad you asked so if someone has more info they will let us know.
