I read your question as have you tried machine SMOKING .. oh my lol no I haven't .. oh and not tried smocking either :) xXx
Christine, I have nothing more to add - than what has bee suggested - good luck.
I 'smocked' my little girls dresses 50+ years ago on my first Wertheim machine. I gathered the skirt fabric with the fine gatherer and then sewed across the gathers with all the fancy stitches in different colours. I had to change the different stitches by inserting cams into the top of the machine.
I'm sure that method would work today but there are more up-to-the-minute ways of machine smocking now.
There are also stitch files available that look like real hand-smocking.

Hi I have done some beautiful real smocking and I have a Read Pleater. I would like to try smocking using my embroidery machine with fabric pleated in the traditional English fashion.
Here are a few links below... The only way I have smocked is with elastic in the bobbin and gathered the fabric, but I've not embroidered anything on that, which I'm sure you can do. But if you are just wanting smocking here are a couple of places that will show you. I've not checked them out, so not sure if it is like I do or otherwise. Hugs, Terre
THis is my new years' choice of round tuits. I decide on one of my outstanding " when I get around to it" and make an effort to do it early in the year. All help and comment welcome
