I find some of the different names of stabilisers confusing as Vilene here in Australia is used as an interfacing when sewing/making outfits e.g. collars, cuffs, lapels etc. I only use light/medium weight tear-away for all things except FSL where I use the mesh style Water Soluble Solvy. Love and blessings Chris
Chris I also thought Vilene was an interfacing for dressmaking. There seem to be so many stabilizers in USA - I am so jealous!!!
I only use tearaway. I bought some cutaway when I first started and hated it. Recently I have bought some fusible tearaway which is also nice but expensive here in S. Africa. Good question.
I find that my designs stitch out best using cut-away, so I use it mostly, but there are times tear-away is fast and easy depending on the density of the design. Cut-away gives more stabiliztion, even the light weight type, than tear-away, for dense designs, and depending on the fabric, helps the stitched design hold up through repeated washings without curling. A non-dense design, like redwork, does well with tear-away. Any fabric that is thin with stretch, such as t-shirt knits, needs a light cut-away to keep a design from curling and keeps the design looking nice longer after washings.

I can't afford lots of different stabilizers so I mostly use 2 or 3 layers of tear away with adhesive spray between the top layer & the material. I haven't had any problems. xx
I'm not a fan of tear away except for ITH projects. Sooo, I use cut away for the most part, either no show diagonal mesh or medium weight.
I think the most I use is wash away, but it depends on the fabric
Like the others, it depends on what you are doing. I use tear away for most filled design stitching, and Vilene for the FSL. And I do have different weight Tear away stabilizers...It really depends on what you are doing. I hate it if the stabilizer tears away as you are stitiching because the wrong type was used.
well that depends on what I am making. all fsl is wss & I make alot of it!fusable lite-weight when I do hand applique or like the cute critters that I have been posting, tear away mostly for ith projects with the exception of fsl. I hope that this will start you off some
Right now tear away just to get rid of it, lol! I personally hate the stuff, it seems no matter what I use it on it tears half way through the design I am embroidering. I just got some cut away recently and LOVE it!!
