I had a lovely visit from Chris today but she left before all the excitement.

I was on the veranda throwing banana pieces to my (ever growing) clan of water dragons, when a red bellied, black snake came onto our jetty for a visit and decided it was going to stay for a while.
Well being as the only good snake is a dead snake, and Ray loves our fur babies (almost) as much as I do, it didn't take long before he was on the jetty with a long handle shovel........
Sorry I didn't get photo's, I was too mesmerised by the snake to come inside and grab a camera.

Last summer I had 2 green garden snakes in my flower garden. I left them alone as the eat the bugs and are non poisoness. I enjoyed watching them though.

Now to me, all snakes are deadly, because I'm just as likely to hyperventilate and have a heart attack!!!! hahahaha!

I do not mind snakes. They eat mice. I am TERRIFIED of mice. The only good mouse is Micky Mouse or a dead mouse! I used to own a 6 ft Python. He used to lie in the sun on the windowsill. I was not scared of him, but terrified of his dinner!

I don't like either, or spiders, wasps, hornets, dragonflies, anything that can sting, bite or strike. I run a mile, straight for the nearest available, best method, to extinguish the threat. LOL!!!

olly by olly 02 Mar 2012

I like spiders. They eat mozzies. Mosquitoes love to suck my blood - horrible things - I itch forever. Don't run a mile - until the wound heals!! LOL

Me too Loralye. A guy I dated once used to keep snakes and I thought I was ok with them, until one day when he got one out of its glass home and came towards me with it draped over his shoulders.
I was out of there so fast he never saw me for the dust!
That's the day I knew it would never work for us. :-)

Thanks Chris. So sorry I couldn't add my photos as I was using the mobile internet, which doesn't connect to my pc downstairs where my photo's are stored.

joann13100 by joann13100 01 Mar 2012

Cool--I was wondering what a water dragon looked like, they look a little like iguanas.

meganne by meganne 01 Mar 2012

My Spanky cat caught a baby one and brought it inside, about 6 weeks ago. I managed to get it from him & into a box, then I took him down to the water's edge and let him go. Now he is one of our regular visitors, and we call him "Stumpy 2" because he lost the end of his tail.

meganne by meganne 01 Mar 2012

lost the end of his tail. Ray is "Stumpy 1", he lost all the fingers off his left hand from an industrial saw accident when he was 17.

Lucky -in Belgium- we do not have problems with snakes, only some ants and spiders (little ones) that can bother us.

I also hate spiders, especially the deadly ones. I'm afraid my home is "off limits" to spiders and other flying stinging, insects so I spray all our doors and windows, screens, surrounds, eaves and veranda's, with long lasting insect/spider killer. I have peace of mind for six months. :-)

The greenies don't pay my bills and until they do what they say carries as much weight with me as the dust bunnies under my bed. LOL!!! It was not an easy decision for me to make, until I thought about the risk to my fur babies.

Very exciting! We have rattlesnakes in the mountains of Virginia, and copperheads in our area, both of which are poisonous. A friend was recently bitten by a baby copperhead, and had several days of hospitalization as a result. She is back to normal now, but her arm was swollen to a huge size, as the baby snakes inject all of their venom in a single bite.
Be careful out there!
Hugs,
Jacqueline

Oh Gosh!!!!!!!!!!!!
My feet are up around my neck as I type!!!!!!!!!!

No. Honestly. I'm fascinated and paranoid at the same time by these creatures - and no-one can sway me from my reaction to them.
Red-bellied blacks, browns, King browns, tigers, taipans, dugites, copperheads, death adders....... a few of Australia's favourites ... just name them and we've got them. We've got tigers and browns around here and I haven't personally met them alive - yet. DSPatrick enjoyed telling me recently that he mowed over one in the orchard exactly where I was standing. I still get a chill up my back when I go to pick apples.

Wow - a poisonous snake around kitties!!! eeek. We had a water dragon as a classroom pet in my friend's classroom. It was really tame and kids loved carrying it around. One time it jumped to my shoulder and I just about screamed. It looks really scary when it is leaping towards you!

We don't have any poisonous snakes around here, but we do have some very large kitties - mountain lions!

I would love to see a picture of a water dragon if you ever get a chance. Are those the cool lizards that run over water?
We have rattlesnakes- us urban gals call 911 and the fire department comes to dispatch them if they hang around.

I am so sorry the snake had to go. Last week we also had a snake in the garden. I picked up my pekinese and made a dash to the house, I also did not want my furbaby getting bitten. Sarah.

I once came home from shopping to find one of my cats toying with a baby brown snake, which immediately got its head flattened by a shovel. I couldn't get kitty to the vet quick enough, but she hadn't been bitten and lived to a ripe old age.

Joann, They are like a lizard but they grow much larger. They are so adorable to watch their antics, when they go anywhere, they do it at a run.
They come every day for a visit and where I started with only one last year, I now have about 4 who come regularly. They know the sound of my voice and will even run towards where I am standing on the verandah. I love them and hope one day I will have the courage enough to have one as a pet. :-)
I've added a link for you to see some photo's.

Australia has more types of venomous snakes than anywhere else on earth. I wouldn't want a snake near my cats either. Sorry snake, you have to go...

meganne by meganne 29 Feb 2012

Wholeheartedly agree. The size of this snake it's bite would kill a child, possibly even an adult. So I won't put my animals at risk, though they say if you have black snakes around you won't get the brown, which are much more deadly.
