Uganda Quilt Update

•I have a stack of 14 beautiful completed quilts folded and stacked very neatly in my sewing room!
•I know there are 6 more that are in the hands of the postal services between here and Australia and the UK and other places in the US!
•There are more completed, and waiting on a second to be completed before mailing and several more being stitched at this moment!
•We have actual commitments from people to make 71 quilts - can you believe that! We need 80 and we're hoping to send 90 so new orphans will receive one also.
•There are some who have committed to make one whom I haven't heard a word from, so if you are one of those people, please just let me know how you are doing and if you need any help completing your quilt :-)

It would be good if all quilts reach me by the last week of April. I'm planning on rolling each one up so it has the most interesting part showing, then using ribbon to tie them up with the messages you have sent. If there are enough little dollies, I thought I should stick one of those in each as I roll it up too! I have 3 friends who will help me the last week of April to complete any more we may need. So, if you only get so far, don't hesitate to just send what you have finished and we will complete them. I know plans change and life gets very complicated, so just keep me informed how you are coming along.

•I myself, have completed six and have cut out 8 more to be stitched by anyone who would like to, and could get them finished and returned.

If you are a person who'd like to participate by stitching one of these quilt "kits" I have cut out, let me know and I will mail one or two to you. All you need to do is stitch them and return them to me. It would help if you can pay the return postage. It would probably be best for these to be sent within the US then... I have made some rag quilt kits, and some basic 5 squares by 6 or 7 squares that need a binding. Shirlene is doing two of these! My sewing machine is in the shop for two weeks - whimper, whine...

•People have asked about mailing them directly to Uganda and I wish this was an option. It just isn't safe as the postal system isn't reliable, and there is a lot of theft. These from the US will be hand delivered. I wonder if anyone from South Africa is going to Uganda, who could hand deliver some SA Cutie quilts for us. I know that sounds far fetched, but God does work in amazing ways :-) We'd all be absolutely be crushed if any of our quilts were stolen and didn't reach the arms of these children. Do you know anyone from South Africa who is going to Uganda before May?

•We still need about 10-20 small 2 layer quilts for boys ages 2-10, not too big, in the size range of about 42 inches by 48 inches. Made mostly of cotton.

•Meganne has two designs you may want to use on them. One says Made with Love, and the other Jesus Loves Me, in their own language. These children will all be learning English as part of the Uganda Project. These can be found on Designs by Cuties. And there is also another Jesus loves me design, kindly digitized by Sue on there too. I'm hoping to get a couple more Jesus (heart) Me designs up later today.

Thank you, incredibly, from the bottom of my heart, for all the love and kind attention to details you are each infusing into these quilts. Wouldn't we love to be the ones to place them in their arms?! God Bless YOU!

Hugs, hugs and more hugs,
Jan

You know that I am working on one.. Well, it is in the washing machine!!! I will show it off at work and then mail it!! I will take a pic after it gets out of the dryer!

I did get a little scissor happy. I need to add an applique to the end of it. Anyone with half a flower that I can overlap??

I am not up on this quilt project{haven't seen much on it}But am very interested in helping. What do you mean by 2 layer quilt? Are they just two layers of cotton without any batting in them? Also can they be any pattern or is there a specific thing they have to be? Please give me a little more info and I will try to do a couple in time. I make and send quilts to Pine Ridge Reservation quite often and enjoy it so why not Uganda??

Also, if any of you have 1 inch ribbon in your stash to donate, that would be great too! We'll use that to tie them up and make them ready to give!
Thanks again!

Good news! Those who have told me you cannot complete - I have already had new people step up and tell me they can make exactly the same number! Actually we are 1 ahead at this moment! Yeah! So we are at 72! We still have 2 months to go. I just thought of two other friends to call - it's dangerous being one of my friends these days!

Hi Diane, I have no idea where the first post ended up. Good animals to use are the African animals like giraffes, elephants, monkeys. And their domestic animals are cows, sheep and goats. Dogs and cats aren't pets, but scary wild animals to the little children. Keep colors medium, as it is dusty there and the quilts will not be washed in clear water.
PM me with any questions :-) Thanks! We have most of the larger quilts we need, still need the smaller ones for boys. But, these children are not "genderized."

Jacqueline, Truly, it was like I was hit over the head to do this! Sometimes he speaks to us softly, sometimes it's a lightning bolt. This was a whole thunderstorm! The response from everyone has been truly amazing. Isn't it wonderful to be put to work by our Lord?! Please pray for 90 and funding for postage and shipping them on the plane to Uganda. God Bless YOU too! Jan

what would be the latest date for them to reach you so you can get them ready? maybe do a doll or hairbow..what do the boys play with?

bumblebee by bumblebee 02 Mar 2012

Could be Hand Puppets, Finger puppets, small flattish type ITH soft animals
I'm making Tic tac toe boards for the older boys and hope to make soft animals
for the smaller ones.

hightechgrammy by hightechgrammy 02 Mar 2012

Oh, That sounds so neat that you included the grandkids on this project! I'll be sure to let you know when it arrives.
Any little handmade items are great, as long as they are tiny, and lightweight. No food. Just little items to be packed in with the quilts that don't add much weight at all. How Fun!

hightechgrammy by hightechgrammy 02 Mar 2012

the quilts that don't add bulk or weight! How fun that will be for them! Thank you!

I am sorry I can't do this . I made another and took it to post office and was still going to cost $35 Plus When I take my quilts to Bali I put them in space saver bags so they don't take up as much space

Raelene, please don't feel bad - that shipping cost is way too high and it makes it prohibitive. We totally understand. You are helping just as much in Bali - the need is just the same. God will provide the quilts we need for Uganda, please know we know you are doing a lot to help in Bali! God Bless YOU!

hightechgrammy by hightechgrammy 02 Mar 2012

all understand. There are needs all over the world, and needs locally too. We help where we can, and in more than one place. I am making some items for the local animal shelter too - LOL. God Bless YOU for helping in Bali! Hugs, Jan

I am going to take as many pictures as I can of them. I just don't have very good light in any place in my house, but I'm going to do my best. They are just amazing! I can feel the love just spill out of the boxes with the quilts!

I sure will take photos. Aren't they going to be attractive all rolled and squished together!! It's exciting seeing them stack up taller and taller in my sewing room. It's going to be quite a large container - probably at least two.

Jan I have one in the making but the fabric for my second one did not happen, so unless I can get to Penrith shops again, I'm afraid the second one may not eventuate.
But don't give up on me yet, where there's a will, there's a way. :-)))

Ray is going to take me to Penrith on Tuesday. WOOHOO!!! Will see if the shop has any of the (special) fabric left, that I was trying to buy for my second quilt. Are you listening Big Man???

hightechgrammy by hightechgrammy 02 Mar 2012

WahHoo! Don't over do yourself, Meg! Sounds like fun - how far is that from home? My husband hates fabric stores. He always wants me to hurry up and get out. You can't hurry in fabric stores. There IS NO hurrying in fabric stores... grrrrr

Hi Jan,
This is such a wonderful project. And as I have told you, I will put together as many quilts as possible. I plan to pack one of the large size flat rate mailing boxes to send to you. I have four completed quilts and many more in process. But life has hit me hard the past few weeks so everything was put on hold. I'm hoping that this weekend will turn things around a tad bit. But I WILL stay in touch with you regarding my progress. This is a very fun project, and I would like to get as many quilts as possible ready for you. I'll post them as they get finished. You are doing such a wonderful service for these youngsters!! It is so sad that they have to grow up with no parents. Good luck, and DO expect me to come through with my promise well before the deadline!!
