Great ideas here. Thanks for asking that question.
I made some for a quilting camp last year in quilt fabric scraps and also some for Christmas in the following style....
Those are very nice looking, my heart would drop if someone spilt coffee or doughnut jam on them. I think thats why I am a bit hesitant to make any. Thanks for the comment! Anna
Emblibrary has a free pattern for a mug rug. Those are the ones I make and the grand kids love them. I also use 100% cotton so they can be washed and used over and over again. Hugs..Carol
Thanks for all the great advice, I think I will be making a set for my house. I really appreciate it!!! Thanks Anna
I made some of these for a craft show using that fake leather (pleather) and embroider ripple stuff on them or line art (not heavy fill stuff) and they sold out, I think because they could be wiped off..
Fake leather!! great idea!! never thought of that!! I imagine they'd sell well for office people, men's gifts and no-fuss people.
I'll tell you what, I make them as a rule with 100% cotton preshrunk! & wash them over & over & over again I usually press them when they come out of the dryer takes 2 seconds & I have them all over the house! Have you ever seen a man fit there cup on a regular coaster! Not around here! Sew the "mug mats" are a MUST for me!It's like Alma said there fast & easy to make & it's always a quickie when you need a fast gift on hand! Man or Women or kid too!
it makes a nice gift with a pretty cup and tea bags or maybe even a fancy spoon. Add a bow and done!
We use coasters "mug mats" around the house all the time as I have hard wood tables and furniture. Mine aren't big enough for a goodie along with the cup, but what a great idea!! I imagine they would wash great. I just toss mine in the wash when they get grungy. I have found that a lingerie bag works well for stuff like that so it doesn't get sucked out with the water in the washer.
I make them. I like the size. They keep the sewing area clean. They make great gifts. My friends love them.
One daughter uses one of hers to lay out her notions at sewing class - the other one's used for her mug and bikkie.
Mine all have washable acrylic felt inside and are completely toss-in-the-tubbable.

I don't have one yet, but I wouldn't be washing it often unless it had something like a muffin or donut unwrapped on it that might leave behind stickiness etc. Could always make one with a wipeable plastic layer for where the food is.
