Could someone answer a question about backing up your embroidery files on discs? What disks do you use? DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, I am a loss. Thank you in advance for your help. Peg

I have mine backed up on a 8GB USB stick. USB sticks can & do go bad I know I had one that did & I thought I lost all my designs until my computer guy was able to retrieve them & download them onto another USB stick. Now I have to back them up on a CD as well just for safety. My friend says an external hard drive is the way to go. That way it does not take up space on your computer. Believe she said you can buy them at Wal-Mart around $50 or so.

I used to use discs until one day I had some trouble. Since then I back up on an external hard drive. I still have some designs on disc. My discs are all read discs. Sarah.

Good Idea to backup often!
I have CD-R; Dvd-R; They are not too expensive.
I do the backup of my lovely/precious new ones on cd 2x a month and all at 3mnth intervals onto Dvd.
Also have some great Quilt,Knitting and Sewing projects That I would hate if I lost them.
NB choose- Write DATA. This is readable for any PC.

You do need to know what your computer will write. Most will write a CD-R and that is what I use. You cannot delete anything you put on it..but you can add to it. It works just fine for me because I always have my folder arranged and in order and have no need to delete any designs.
I also have all my designs on memory sticks. All my sticks are different colors, etc. so in my albums I have which stick the design is on - in which folder - and I list my CD's A - B - C, and etc.

My computer asks for writeable disks - so I don't really know. Most of mine are on USB sticks for my embroidery machines and I make a printout of it once they are to capacity (where they start running slow on your machine) and numbered, so I just go thru the pages to see what I have. I usually put items (I>E> childrens, babies, flowers, animals,, my own, cuties, etc.) together onto one USB.

Memory sticks can also be used.

To the best of my knowledge, you need to know if your machine records onto DVD-R or DVD+R, they are slightly different. I have one computer that takes the -R, one that takes the +R. Either DVD will hold more files than a regular CD. The DVD-RW means "read/write", and the files can be erased and re-recorded, just like the old floppy disks were. The other DVD's make permanent recordings, so mistakes can't be erased, just as if it were a movie or music. DVD-RW's cost more money. Whatever you use, use good quality, and protect them. A big scratch can lose you access to your designs. Always have things backed up in a couple of different places, in case something happens to one of the backups. Best of luck, Marji

I have two external drives that I save my designs on. That way they are all in one place instead of searching several CD's or DVD's to find a design. They really arent that expensive. They are both a TB, so I don't think I will ever run out of space on them. I used to save them on disks, but it got to be a pain looking for a certain design.

YOU put them on a cd with your program on your pc. I can use +R or -R. I had Sonic and used that program or if you have Nero, you can burn a data cd. it will hold a lot of files but I find it better , for my burner/reader , if I don't put too many.Hope this helps-Toogie

One of the sites I get designs from sent an e-mail this afternoon. And for all your designs said to back them up on disks. And if you lose all your files for the designs. Either free or paid for. If they are lost and you want to replace them you will have to pay. Even if they were free at the time you got them. Thanks again Peg.
