I have seen ads for stumpwork designs. What is stump work? Nobody seems to know of the folks I have asked so I'm hoping one of you smart Cute folk would have an answer. Thank you, Meri

I've also seen it called 'raised embroidery' or 3d embroidery. Some of the layered machine embroidery designs, like the multi winged butterflies seem to be a take on that. Or that was always my impression.

It is a form of three-dimentional embroidery. Sometimes the shapes of petals or leaves are made from fine wire, and then the embroidery thread is worked onto it. The finished form is then placed onto the embroidery to form a 3D effect (like bunny's ears below). Below is the link to images of stumpwork. Hope this helps. Coral

Stumpwork is kind of a 3 dimensional embroidery. It gives the finished product texture and character. If you google it you can find out quite a bit.

It's an embroidery that is raised, done by hand and it's very pretty but looks time consuming.
