Finally stitching something for myself and it is being ruined as I watch. I am doing the hummingbird done with ripple and most of the thread on top is white and there are loops sticking up and it is just trashing the top so I won't be able to wear it outside! I am using a knit top, not loose knit, a new ball point needle and threads I have used before and only going to be a mess when it is done. Seems my machine only wants me to make angels to give away. The hummingbird turned out so nice on the kitchen soap bottle aprons DeVon made and I love the hummingbird so when I downloaded it I planned it for a top, guess it is not meant to be :(

I have just seen an article in Embroidery Library about embroidering onto a t-shirt. It says not to use tear-away because it will cause loops among other problems. Below is the link. Hugs, Lidia

Thanks, I will check this out later today. Getting taxes done this morning, yuck! Then blood work and there better not be any errors there today!!!

I fear doing any embroidery on a ready made item, because I'm sure to mess it up.I would prefer to embroider on fabric and then make something out of it with the successful embroidery. I've owned my machine for little over a year and have yet to put a design on any of my clothes because I don't want to ruin them. Pathetic, right?
Good luck with your quest for the right recipe for embroidery and knit. There is a recipe for every type and weight of fabric, and I don't have that cookbook yet either!! :) Hang in there.

When I first started embroidering, I got so hooked that I was prowling the house looking for things to embroider on! Jump in and give it a try- you will be surprised how well things work out. Not saying I have not ruined anything. Also, I pick up knit shirts at the thrift shop for cheap so if ruined, no big loss. Good luck.

Not pathetic, that is the same with me! 2 years now and I only put a few things on sweats and "around the house" clothes! Another reason I could never do anything for sales, I'd ruin it. FSL is only thread to throw away if it doesn't work.

I agree Debra, I tell people I won't sew on that favorite shirt of theirs because I may ruin it and I don't need that pressure! I do this for fun only, I don't want it to turn into work.

When the bobbin is pulling up to the top, it sounds like your top tension is too tight and it is pulling it up. I'd loosen the top tension. Also, don't know what stabilizer you're using, but it should be a cut away. You may need to float a stabilizer under the hoop also, as the ripple designs get quite dense in places.

It might possibly be your stabilizer Lee./Lillian

Hi Debra, I have just been making a T Shirt with Katulles peacocks. The stabilizer I used was poplin material. Hooped it with the stretchy, making sure the grain of poplin was straight [vertical]. Cut it away with my pinking shears to stop fraying.

Haven't tried that.

I was having an off day and nothing seemed to stitch out without the bobbin running out and the thread breaks.

Ended up walking away for a while. A patch should make the top looking nice. Sometimes I have trouble with knit especially stretching even after a few layers of stabilizer.

leenova54 by leenova54 20 Mar 2012

I don't want to patch and I am not wild about applique.

IT HAPPENS WHEN THE BOBBIN IS NOT THREADED PROPERLY.

I'll have to try another bobbin cause I really would like to put some things on my tops with such nice weather is here to show them off!

That sounds more like a threading issue, maybe not going thru all the guides exactly right. Sometimes my bobbin needs rethreading and it seem fine when I look at it, works after I redo it???? Not sure why.

I'll have to check that out too. I had just wound the bobbin and everything. I used 4 colors of thread on top so it wasn't top thread doing it. Thanks.

Oh, dear Debra, I think you are exhausted from all your hard work. Happenned to me too and I did an applique over the messed up design. It turned out great and nobody knows any better. Love and hugs.****

Not me, it's the machine or bobbin thread. Time to get out the manual and read on how to adjust it again. I'll wear the shirt anyway. I have some iron on but it's not mesh. Hate buying so much stuff that won't be used often.

Oh Debra - how annoying. I also have been having some horrible sewing days. Many hugs Sarah.

Things just aren't going my way lately. It has to be the machine or the bobbin thread I think. I had this before with bobbin thread coming to the top and paid a guy to fix it but all I have done in quite a while it FSL, now and then I noticed the loops on top.

Oh dear. I feel bad for you! I hate it when I want something to go smoothly and it does not, especially when it is a garment.....Maybe you can appliqué something over it. I did that with a shirt for my g'daughter. I cut a piece of fabric the size of the mistake, and then did the design on it. The I appliquéd it onto the shirt. Maybe you can do it that way? Good luck! Hope the other things in your day were rewarding for you and made up for the difficulty with the shirt;>) HUGS!!

I'll just keep it to wear around the house. It doesn't look too bad but I can tell. Too many loops sticking up. I put some Fray Block on it, thankfully I bought a tube when someone recommended it.

Sorry to hear that. It could be due to the wrong stabilizer. What type of stabilizer/s have you used? Hugs, Lidia

I used tear away and spray adhesive so the knit wouldn't move, had the problem before too.

suet by suet 20 Mar 2012

I had this problem too when using a spray adhesive. Sometimes the needle seems to catch a bit and causes the loops. I had more joy using cutaway iron on mesh from florianni on the back of the tshirt and then hooping with a tear away.

lidiad by lidiad 20 Mar 2012

Sorry I'm late. Some time ago I read that the best way is to use iron-on mesh at the back (I did not know that it's cutaway as well) and to place a thin, film wash-away on top as well, so that some stitches don't disappear into the knit. Four or five years ago I have used a double sided iron-on product, don't know its name, and it attached to both the back of the knit and to a piece of cut-away, and the result was good. Now we need only one product, it's great. Thank you for the info, Suet. Hugs, Lidia
