I tried "mylar" from the dollar store... Disaster. It tears and when you are finished with the design the stuff pops out of the holes leaving holes. So just letting you know there is a difference in sewing mylar and the stuff you buy at the dollar stores for anyone interested. Suzanne

What type of design did you use with Mylar, not all will work. If there isn't a small spaced (open) overlay over the Mylar it falls out.

Dollar Store & Sewing Mylar ARE the same. The transparant kind you can hand wash and line dry. The colored foil will always run (fade)and should be used for ornaments and non-washable projects.

I'm posting a picture of a Mylar Sheep if you look closely you will see that it is held down by an open stitch.

I love the look and have used it many times.

I've used the Dollar store "Mylar" without any problems. I used the clear opalescent on FSL Angels and they turned out beautifully. Everyone that received one was so please with them. I'll keep using it for my FSL that I want to sparkle, but would be leary of putting it on anything that needed washing or ironing.

I just posted my first fsl mylar projects ever. Easter ornaments not for washing. First with mops fsl egg 2012 and with a very fussy tatted cross from Murphys
designs. It worked surprisingly well. No tears no popouts I even ironed it in between paper towel while wet to set it- just to see if it would melt after washing out the stabilizer in hot water.
No color bleed or melting.

I just wanted to see if I liked the look.
Pictures do no not do justice to how preety the mylar makes them look. I can't wait to make christmas ornaments.

That is what I found out also. They never really look as good on the pictures as in real life.

I used Mops egg also. Fun stuff to use. It looks so nice when stitched up. Pictures do not show how shiny it is. Real pretty in person. Suzanne

I use dollar store "mylar" all the time. Kids clothes, under flowers on aprons, etc. Washes just fine. Mine says "washable" on the roll. The flat packaged "mylar" is thinner, but still works. I love it! Linda

I will give that a try. I don't mind trying things new. Suzanne

I have done multiple designs with the dollar store Mylar. I use the packaged ones and not the rolls. I had absolutely no problem. Used them in FSL Mylar combo designs which means usually very dense. Sorry yours didn't work out.

That's very disappointing for you.

Buy your sewing mylar from ...

http://www.heirloomsbysharon.com/

It's worth it to get the right thing, as well as some good hints about using it. I get my mylar from Sharon and the items wash and iron perfectly.

I had the same problem. PLUS, I tried using colored mylar. As soon as it got wet, the color bled all over the fabric and created a huge mess. I guess ya get what ya pay for. :(

So true!! The sewing "mylar" came out perfect! Thought I would try anyway. Well guess the dollar store stuff will become wrapping paper. Suzannne

Yes, I did read color mylar will bleed- I used clear opalescent but not in clothes.
