When embroidering a cross stitch design(or redwork)is the thread used a different weight? When I do mine it just seems to disappear in the fabric and I find I need to go over design 2-3 times for it to be seen.Of course sometimes this just tears my fabric.

These designs are so OLD (like me)I have no idea where they came from. These are all designs I hand embroidered.Secret as to their age thread was 7 cents.

I have used just one thread of Rayon and never a problem. The ones I have made are from Ellen Maurer Stroh and they look great when done.

My "trick" I use two threads at the same time, thread them both through the needle and instant double thick design. Less needle holes through the fabric.
Be careful of some designs because they might be dense already.
happy stitching!

PS The threads need not be the same colour, if you like.

This took me a long time to stitch. At my age I can't take that long on any project. So I was trying to cheat and do straight stitching on the machine but I guess it won't do.pattern is long lost and it was made since time out of mind(a long time ago in other words)

Was just trying to do designs in machine rather than by hand stitching. Here are my two examples.

I am just following the transfer. This design is not on the machine.I am going slow and fabric is stabilized.

Can you adjust the top tension and make it looser?
I stitched Christmas goldwork in cross-stitch designs on ordinary Christmas fat quarter fabrics for mugrugs and had no trouble at all.
If I were losing the design I'd try loosening the tension first.
I wish you luck with this because cross-stitch is really great fun to watch stitching out.

That was a great question. Thanks for asking, I too am wondering about the answer.

If you use a quite furry materials (like towels ) it might be useful to use a wash away vilene on top.

No I am not doing cross stitch on terry, that's definitely a waste of time.I never hoop terry just use a stick on back then use a wash away(or tearaway) on top.

I have done cross stitch designs very successfully with normal rayon thread. What kind of fabric are you using?

Sue, I am using a medium weight muslin, and have used a lighter one in past. I stabilize my fabric but if I dare go over the design machine eats it. I change needles, design is not complex. Just wanted to make some needle cases.
