Uganda Quilt Update!

Here are the quilts that are stacked in my sewing room! There are 64 in all shapes and sizes, styles and colors - and all stitched with love! Every one that I have received as of April 7 is in one of these stacks. (There are 7 more I know of, in our community still being completed.) 64+7 = 71. I know of several quilts still being lovingly stitched by Cuties.
The plastic container has lots and lots of finger puppets, pocket dollies, pillowcase dresses, hand puppets, Tic Tac Toe games, hair clippies, dollies and a few assorted other goodies for our orphans. You Cuties have been absolutely amazing! I am simply overjoyed with the response you have given to help these orphans so far away. When you consider we all support local charities, it's amazing how we just keep digging deeper to help around our world. We are blessed, aren't we?!?!
I have tried to make sure I let people know when your packages have arrived, but I know for sure I have missed one that arrived this week - a huge one full of frogs and finger puppets too. Please tell me who sent that, the paper on the box was removed and now I can't tell exactly who did all this work! I'm so sorry. It is an amazing work of heart!
There are going to be two trips to our orphanage in Uganda this summer. One in May and one in August. So.. if there are any late finishers, don't panic, your quilt and other goodies can be included in the August trip!
I would really appreciate hearing from all Cuties who are working on quilts who aren't quite finished, or will be completed soon. Please either PM me with a new message with your update, or send me an email at Janwharton@me.com . If you need someone else to complete what you have started, or have fabric already, please don't hesitate to send what you have finished and my "team" of sewing friends will complete any UFOs the last week of April. After that, any projects can be sent in August. If everyone sends the number of quilts they have said they will, we should have 88 for May! It would be great to know your status! Thank you!
Many cuties have also sent gifts of money to help buy fabric and assist with postage. Thank You. I also have a short stack of "love offerings" in the form of money orders, checks and cash that will be sent with the quilts to pay for the extra baggage charges along the route to Uganda. It will probably cost about $250 to get the quilts to Uganda. I have $70.00 already toward that! Any left over money will be sent to the orphans for food or other supplies.
Mail quilts to me at Jan Wharton, PO Box 516, Grand Lake, CO USA 80447. Please mail by the middle of April if you possibly can :-)
Thank YOU all and May our Lord bless YOU as you have all blessed these children :-)
I can't tell you what a blessing this has been for me, and walking into my sewing room, I can just feel the love emitted from all these beautiful quilts!
Love and hugs and more hugs,
Jan
Don't hesitate to PM or email! I'd like to know where you are on your quilt :-)

I have a boys quilt I have almost finished. I finally started ealrier this week. I didn't say anything earlier about doing one because I didn't know if I could find time. Plan on finishing it today, but won't be able to send until late this coming week. Thanks to my crazy busy life, lol! I will try to post a picture in projects later this week also, if I get a chance to do so.

That's great Diane, WE can all understand "busy" and lots of Cuties and other friends have had LIFE get in the way. I think it just has something to do with being people who care about and for others. It will be great if you finish and get it here in time for the May trip, but the August trip will work great too! God Bless you! Jan

Hi Meri, Many Cuties have put their name on them, many on the Uganda label with the elephant. Many have no name on them, and some have asked me to put the Uganda label on for them, which I am doing :-) Either way is absolutely fine :-) I don't think I had your quilt in the count - so that is one more!!

hightechgrammy by hightechgrammy 15 Apr 2012

had you in the for sure being finished count, so that is wonderful - one more! God Bless YOU!!! and Thank YOU too!

We now have exactly 70 quilts in our stack!!! I know of ten more that are coming from Cuties, and four from local friends! There also may be four more from Cuties that make it for the May trip and three more from Colorado. I have $110 in donations to help with extra baggage charges! Praise the Lord! God Bless you ALL! Thank you, Claudia. The Cuties were just so willing to help, it hasn't been hard. It has been such a blessing to be at the center and to get to touch and hold each quilt as it comes in! These kids are going to be soooo thrilled!

This has been quite a project. You know, I think the most difficult part will be to decide which child receives "their" quilt.
It almost looks like a military duffel would hold all of the quilts if they were packed in there good and tight. Good luck with that. My last ones are almost ready to be sent. Perhaps someone could create a page of pictures once the children receive their gifts?? THAT would be a huge reward!!!

The plan is for there to be lots of pictures, but they can't promise, because you know how things can go... The main thing is that no child be left out and that all receive their own special quilt in a special way. I wish I could be there too! Isn't it such a blessing to be a part of this!?!?!!!

Please, if you haven't completed your quilt yet, please let me know. You can PM me here or send a email to me at janwharton@me.com. I have a team of friends who can finish any uncompleted quilts the last week of April :-) I definitely understand that "life" can get in the way of even the best intentions - and projects :-) Hugs and Thanks, Jan

Like WOW!!!!! It's so wonderful that there are so many people willing to make for others. We as a guild were making quilts for cancer patients at CHOC house but sadly I have not been involveled lately. The biggest problem always is postage. To send anything out of the country starts off at nearly $10 for a 1kg package. Hoping to start "blanket"making for our local poor. There is a huge squatter/new township setup near our area and our church has started soup kitchens so people have food before they take ARVs. Blackets is next on our list.
Hugs and praise for the work you do.Elizabeth

Thanks for the Wow!, Elizabeth! And thank you to you for the work you do through your church too. Postage has been a big part of our Cutie's gifts in doing this, mailing from Australia and South Africa have been ridiculously expensive, and some have managed to do it in spite. Even within the US some have spent up to $20 to get their packages of love to Colorado. Our family also supports local charities for families, and the animal shelter too. We just keep digging deeper :-)

Chris, it truly is. I know it may sound a bit trite to say I can feel the love, but it's true. I wish each of the quilts could be featured, so each shows up. I have the fabric now for each of the 7 from Linda :-) Thank you for all you have done:-)

My eyes leak too, whenever I open a new package at the post office with a quilt inside. When I pull the quilt out, I can feel the love. No kidding! They bring tears to my eyes. Sometimes the boxes have other handmade goodies in them!

I need to take a picture of all the little goodies that go with the quilts. The plastic container is nearly full of dollies, and puppets - both finger and hand puppets, and gift baggies stuffed with hair clips for girls, and Tic Tac Toe games for boys, and stuffed animals, and bears and sunny faces! All made with love!

hightechgrammy by hightechgrammy 09 Apr 2012

all made with love to these children. There are pillowcase dresses and froggies and elephants. Thank you to all for these extras that will be tucked inside the quilts for an extra loving surprise!

It is truly amazing! Can you imagine all the hours spent stitching these 65 quilts?!!! And with each hour how much time was spent thinking about the little recipients! It blows me away - and I get to see them everyday.
