Any possible solutions for my top thread being eaten by my bobbin. The stange thing is that this happens about half way through a project - the last 4 to be exact. And it is so bad that I have had to cut my projects out of my machine.

I use a single hole stitch plate and use the Q foot when I embroider on my Designer 1 machine.

Not sure you can get a single hole stitch plate for your machine brand but it is worth checking.

The single hole plate will not allow your fabric to be puller into the hole and into the bobbin area.

It sounds like your top thread is not in the top thread tension right or is comming out of the tension disk or your top thread is jumping off the hook of the take up lever.
Take you machine in and have them check it.

You have plenty of ideas for solutions here but I'm wondering if the problem arises when the bobbin area has become warm from working since it occurs about the same time on each project. I'm wondering if it is something to do with the threading area warming up rather than the actual bobbin itself.
(I've never won awards for mechanical thinking... :})

I'd just take the machine back to the dealer and ask for a new machine.
My local dealer where I do lessons, just this last week ordered a replacement machine for a brand-new Pfaff Creative 4.0 which wouldn't hold the Settings information on the screen. The new machine arrived yesterday during our lesson.
I'll ask her tomorrow if she has had any other people experiencing your problems with this machine.

What kind of machine do you have? I had a Brother 4500D that had that exact same problem. I had it in for repair a dozen or so times and was ready to quit embroidery altogether when the owner of the store switched it out for a new one. The problems stopped. I had a lemon of a machine. Talk to your store personnel. If it is happening after you change thread colors, then there might be an inexpensive answer. Good luck.

Try using a thread stand so the thread can feed straight up. If you don't have a stand you can fashion one that will work using household items. There was a post recently that described various thread stand methods being used by some Cuties.

Are your bobbins the plastic ones which I've never had any trouble with or the ready-wound, cardboard top and bottom, on a plastic centre kind which when thread is getting lowish,(Halfway through project maybe?) the cardboard top sometimes drops and the top thread gets caught round and round the plastic centre? Try changing type of bobbin. Jan

I am using the plastic pre-wound - ones that came with my machine.

Can't be that then,

When this happens to me it is usually that I haven't threaded the top just right, an the tension is off. Basic rule of thumb is, if the problem is on the bottom, it's because something up top is wrong. And vice versa - just the opposite - if the problem is on top, it's probably the bobbin. An of course, always change your needle - LOL

Have you noticed if the top thread is still threaded through the TAKE-UP lever when this happens?

This was a common problem on the Husqvarna Designer Diamond machines, yes even after paying over $10,000.

And the resulting problem is just like you describe.
A bird's nest of thread in the bobbin.

Husqvarna fixed the problem by adding a plastic slip on cover for the take up lever, to stop the thread jumping out.
I still think most of these machines are missing a thread guide between the take-up lever and the needle and a lot of thread problems could be avoided if there was one. I will often push my thread through a metal strip on the machine that is placed, very conveniently, in the right place for another thread guide, (but it isn't one and it isn't meant to be used as one) and I have to use a needle threader to get the thread through it, but it did the trick and solved the problem until Husqvarna corrected their oversight.
Hugs n roses, Meganne

I too get this sometimes when it jumps out of the take-up lever. I have the Diamond.

meganne by meganne 21 May 2012

Hi Carolyn, You should see your dealer about the fix Husqvarna came up with and they should provide and install it for you for free because it is a manufacturer re-call.

You can put your top thread on the hook of the take up lever from left to right rather than the normal right to left.
The thread will cross it self and stay on the hook.
Have been doing this on my Designer 1 machine for years.

If it was at the same spot could it be the design? Have you tried a different one?

I had similar on a Brother 3100D. Turned out to be a wear spot on the front of the bobbib case. $100 for a new bobbin case but no longer have that problem.
If it's new take it back to the shop. xx

I don't have the same machine, but with many machines the thread will occasioally leap out of the top tension -especially depending on where the thread is situated. Are you using a regular sized reel of thread or a large cone, and where is it whilst sewing?

I have medium sized ones and smaller Madiera

If your machine is new see the dealer, something is not right and I seem to remember you had another problem with it. Did you get any lessons with your machine? Embroidery is a lot more fun when everything works right.

Oh dear., this doesn't sound good, how very frustrating.
Have you tried taking the bobbing casing out and giving it a good clean/brush. maybe could be some thread still jammed in there.
Or..
Is the top thread running smoothly or is it getting caught along the way?

These are the things I would check first.

Oh and welcome to cute :)

Oops... that was meant to read 'bobbin' not bobbing...lol

PookieSue by PookieSue 20 May 2012

I have taken the bobbin casing out each time and cleaned it because it is a mess. Top thread runs along smoothly and then all at once my machine goes crazy - it is a new Pfaff creative 4.0.
I tested it earlier and it clogged up at the exact same spot on the same pattern.

PookieSue by PookieSue 20 May 2012

same spot.
