I need some suggestions... I'm making a small quilt for my niece for her baby. Since this will be my sister's, who died when my niece was little, first grandchild, I want to somehow include my sister in this gift. There were flowers with red gingham ribbon at her wedding, in her memory. But, I made this little quilt, kind of like, FOR my sister, because of course she can't. I did put lots of little blue gingham squares :-) Can I stitch something on the quilt maybe? How could I do something like that? Thanks for your ideas.... Jan

We have a tradition with my friends who've lost a loved one. We get a shirt, skirt or something that belonged to the deceased and create a stuffed animal and dress it in little clothes made from his/her clothes. We also put something like in loving memory of.... on it somewhere. They have becomed cherished keepsakes for may people. I have one I made when my sister died.

I love it. I had never thought of this, and I've had her shirt ever since she passed away in 86. I found it! Thanks

I left thanks and other comments for you all, but for some reason, they won't submit. I LOVE your ideas and I think I can incorporate them ALL! I have a cotton blouse of hers that is kind of poppy/red! I can use if for lots of things. This quilt is tiny - only about 30 X 36 - just a fancy little receiving blanket with just the two layers. But, I'm also making a crib size one that I can incorportate the red fabric of her blouse into!!! Now I'm flying! Thanks, Cuties - I knew YOU would share some great and meaningful ideas! Hugs, Jan

I did one in memory of my sister for her grandbaby and embroideried it on the material for the back of the quilt. kind of found the lower right corner and put in the childs name, birthdate, and then in memory of grandma (her name) and the date. My neice loved it . Hope this helps.

do it before you put the back on!

I left the back open so I can do that before the binding! Great idea. Thanks

What if you appliqued a heart with your sister's name on it? Or 4 hearts with all the baby's grandparents names. I would ask your niece if she has any ideas. What about a tree with owls and name the owls.

Dear Jan, with all quilts you've just had in your home - I'm sure there must have been some that had applique on them. I know I did that for my Dad and used his clothes. Loralye has done the same thing. It's great for the person getting the quilt to handle the clothes that once belonged to the loved one. I definitely would put applique on it. You could also incorporate the gingham in it too. Love Chris

I found the blouse!!! It's perfect. It has a pocket I think I'll put on the back of his little quilt - now what to put in it - a poky little puppy, I think!

You are a darling sister,Hugs for you.
I have collected some quilt designs that are like RW quilt shapes. Maybe stitched on after the quilt is done to puff the gingham blocks.

you could embroider what you want to say on the label & maybe if you have anything fabric wise of your sister then you could en-corporate it in the quilt. My BEST & FAVORITE quilt is the one that I made that has fabric nighties from my grandma & my mom & me & my first born daughter!
