Now on a happier note. To all those who gave me helpful suggestions for Sparky, my Scottie. Thank you for all your words of encouragement and helpful suggestions.

I am going to look into a kennel a 20 miles city to the north of us. Someone said they were pretty good when I when Sparky was in obedience training at PetSmart. ( we left our cat at a vet here and the day we picked him up he was howling like a banshee. I didn’t realize what had happened til about 3 mos. Then it was too late to prove. When we drove up to pick him up I was going to video tape it to add to the video of our trip, but I was so excited to see him again I had forgot the camera in the car. That would have been the proof we needed. But….)I do plan to leave something with my scent on it with him when the time comes. I hadn't thought of that and have heard it works well.
The fence is almost complete. We just have about 7-9 feet to go where the gate is. But the part where the neighbor can reach over is too tall for him to reach Sparky (I hope, crazy people can figure out he impossible at times) Anyway, we have done what we could so far and I don't know yet if it will be worked on at all today. We 'old folks get sore muscles'. I still can't believe 'I' set the posts. If I hadn't it would most likely be a pile of lumber setting in a pile still. So now Sparky can go outside and run and if he barks, I bring him in when I hear him, which to date is always when he is out, letting him know that is a "NO, NO". Hopefully it will have some impact.
To try to reprogram him, even though he seems true to his breed and doesn't forget if someone hurts him or scares him, I have started a new routine that I hope I can do 2-3 times a week. I have started taking him to a park, not a dog park. I have to drive 15 miles for that, but a park 4 miles from home with 'doggie poo bags' so I know he's allowed and hundreds of feet of interwoven sidewalks within it so I can walk on the sidewalk and he can kick up his back feet and let the grass fly. The first time out I couldn't believe how excited he was. He has only gone twice so far when I went to pick up prescriptions. It has done wonders. He didn't like the car before, he would try to crawl in my lap (thank God for doggie seat belts), now he lays calmly on the seat. There is a dog yipping outside right now and Sparky is just calmly laying by my feet, ordinarily he would head out to help the other dog. I am working on trying to keep him from barking at the neighbor’s motorcycle when it comes and goes. I know it will be a toughy to do because ALL dogs seem to go crazy for sirens and motorcycles. Just now the neighbor came home and Sparky started for 'his' door and I said 'No' and he came back...I found his weakness, scratching his back for about 1-2 min. and I do mean a good backscratching that no 'man' could resist. I started that and he started to respond better. I had been giving treats...but they didn't work. Hey, I can't complain..backscratching is free.
With the few changes so far maybe it will be calmer here until I go in for surgery. I’m pushing this hard to try get as much accomplished just in case I start feeling worse.

I wish you good luck with your furbaby! They ae such fun to have around and my female Pekingese is a very quiet and loving girl. She was not when I first adopted her but I had an older female Peke that had been with me from the day she was born. She was calm, well behaved, loving, and followed most commands. The baby loved her and she mothered the baby so she was extra easy to train. She is fiesty but only when enticed to play. The harder she plays the easier it is to get her quieted down. She only barks when someone comes to the door or when the huge dog across the road goes out to potty and barks while he is outside. He will bark and she will bark back like they are talking to each other.

My Pekingese is also pad trained and never makes a mess. I am crippled and sometimes I am not able to get up and down the steps very well. It is wonderful to have a pad trained furbaby! Of course, it can be expensive but so can accidents on the carpet. I figure it is worth the cost of the pads to keep the carpet safe! I know this sounds unbelievable but all I had to do was buy the pads and show her where they were when I first got her and she has never made a mess! They have a built in scent in the pads that only the dog can smell. The better behaved pups will usually go straight to the pads. Of course it is much easier for a female to squat and hit the pad than it is for a male to heist his leg and miss the pad. Patty was a baby when I got her and she went straight to the pads everytime. For many yrs I was involved in canine rescue and it never seemed that easy with the other pups over the yrs.

We bought one of those artificial grass enclosed 'potty boxes'. I searched the web and found one with sides being Sparky is a MALE.
It worked until he found out about 'real' grass. Now to disinfect it and make it a bed for out on the deck because that's what he uses it for anyway.

Good ideas for Sparky! Seems like you are toning his behavior in calming ways. My daughter, who has a Golden Doodle (Lab/Poodle), Barley, puts Barley in a kennel during the times I am not available to "dog sit" for her, and Barley seems to enjoy it. He is such a sweet dog, I do not mind keeping him at all. Wish I lived nearby, I would gladly keep Sparky for you! Best wishes on your surgery!
Hugs, Angel

Congratulations on your work with Sparky! It seems as though your efforts are working.
I understand about the treats and free back scratches. I am happy for you about the dog park.
Continued good luck. Pet Sparky for me.

Hugs to you both,

Bonnie
