How do you use fonts?

I'm new to embroidery and I'm not creative. I love the decorative fonts, like the Light Day and the Golden Painting Font, but I don't know how to use them. Do you write an entire phrase or title with them or just the first letter of the phrase or title? Please explain how you use these beautiful decorative fonts. Thanks for your help.

I just made a dress for the little girl next door and put one of the decorative 3 inch fonts on the bodice. Just her first initial and it already had flowers around it. It was a freebie H

I like to use the embossed letters on towels.
When embroidering on towels use wash away topper stabilizer so the embroidery design does not sink into the threads of the towels. Hope this helps. hugs joyce

Welcome to Cute! I generally use a capital letter plus whatever I find matches it most closely from my Janome software. I do a whole name on towels, but if I were doing a clutch purse, key fob etc, it would just be the capital. It's always the letter you miss collecting that you're going to need, of course :)

have made the grand-children tote bags for their Christmas gifts with the intial in one of the 'fancy style' letters. look good on pencil cases etc. not whole words, just initial.

For the ones you mentioned, I would only use Light Day as an initial, because it's so fancy in itself. But the Gold Font could be used to make words, because the upper case is fancy but not too embellished, and there are lower case letters for that alphabet. Sometimes, depending on which one you're using, those lower case cursives could be used with a number of more embellished alphas as an initial letter. Test it out in your software, see how it looks. Experiment by monogramming an old set of sheets for yourself, if you don't like the results, what the heck, you'll be asleep mostly anyway, hee hee hee. Good luck, Marji

Oops, I looked at "Gold" font, not "Gold Painting"--that one's way fancier. Check out plain Gold, good cursive elegant font.

Welcome to Cute! I have used several fonts together to spell a name to give a variety - something like the light day font I would only use that for the first letter and then something less decorative for the rest. If you have a look in projects, it will give you ideas for many things.

Hello, welcome to our site ! Always get help here. Personally I think it depends on the letter itselves. I would not create ex a complete name with the Lightday font, cos that's too much. Some letters you can put together. So usually I use 1 letter and add the rest with a "plain" font of my machine

I've used the fancy Christmas letters as the centre of nine-patch blocks in Christmas fabrics to make personalised totes for friends as gift bags.
I have grand plans to make the children's alphabets into quilts, especially those alphabets which are already digitised as quilt blocks.
I like to personalise small projects for friends with their initials e.g. lipstick/tissue holders with an initial.
I wouldn't stitch an entire name onto a child's item, clothing or bag, but I'd certainly use the alphabet initials on bags, jackets, caps and such.
I have so many alphabet sets now that I 'collect' them rather than use them. It's a very pleasant addiction.

When the font is as busy as some of these are I use the letter for on bookbags for the kids. I also make different handbags and sometimes personalize them with an initial for the receiver. Truthfully there is no limit to ideas....just think outside the box. They are also wonderful for a gift blanket, towels, or gift item for a special occasion or wedding.

This is a good question. There is a lot of confusion over the terminology! A "font" is a set of letters which can be used to write words, sentences etc in whatever size you need. (Just like word processing.) The Light Day font is mis-named as it is really an "alphabet" with the design for each letter being a fixed size. As Meganne says these are usually used for monograms or initials.
Many people collect alphabets because they are so pretty, but most letters don't get used!

Welcome to Cute by the way!

Quite right, Sue, most of the letters on Cute designated as "...font" are really alphabets. I think the misnomer happened because Veronika isn't a native English speaker, and probably too late to fix now, hee hee hee.

Fix the term 'font', that is, not fix Veronika, she's just fine as is!!

That one does moderately 'irk' me, too. I rename them to 'alpha' as I save them :)

I think most of us use them on their own as a monogram on towels etc. Depending on how much decoration is around each letter they can be used as the first letter of a name, reverting to a smaller, lower case for the balance of the name, but I don't think Light Day alphabet would be suitable to use like this because of the amount of surrounding decoration.
It's just a matter of your own preference.
Hugs n roses, Meganne
