Does anyone use a tool to change the needle in your sewing machine, besides the screw driver? I saw a video and now I can't even find the video where they used a tool to hold the needle while they tightened the screw to hold in place.

I didn't know there was anything but fingers. I'll have to look at my brush, see if it has a hole in it. My problem isn't so much holding, as being able to see! Bifocals put my head into a really dumb position. I do it by feel. Interesting question, I like that Husqvarna thingy, could use it for heavy jeans, that's a great idea. Hugs, Marji

There is another one by Dritz that I like. I have it tied to each of my machines with a ribbon - that way I always know where it is. I don't use the threader end - I bought them for the inserter end. I got mine at Joanns when the notions wall was on sale (and that is coming next week).

I use an old fashioned small metal pliers, that fit my hand comfortably. I find it loosens and tightens the screw much easier than the screwdriver. I have used the pliers to hold the needle firmly in place, while I tighten the screw with the screwdriver. Sometimes, I just hold the needle in place with my thumb and forefinger, and tighten the screw with the pliers for a firmer grip on the screw.

I use long nosed tweezers, the same ones I use to hold threads to trim while a design is stitching (needle stopped of course) but after seeing the little gadget for changing needles, couldn't one be made from a piece of cardboard? Like just push the needle through it and hold in place while tightening the screw? I'm a long way from shops so I think I'd try that before buying a tool lol. I also got the little brush with a needle hole in the end with my overlocker, but never think to use that. :) xXx

Good thinking! One could do that especially with a fairly thick piece of cardboard so the needle is less likely to slip right out again. Could also drill a fairly small hole in a piece of wood or a ruler, though getting one side flat could be trickier!

marjialexa by marjialexa 24 Jun 2012

Wouldn't pushing a new needle thru cardboard dull it? Don't know, just wondering.

danababes by danababes 25 Jun 2012

If you're worried about dulling the new needle how about making the hole with the old one?

I have a special tool and I can't always find it. The screwdriver is to long, so I keep a dime handy and it works like a charm! I hold it in place with my thumb or fingernail like Joyce does.

I put my hand palm up and use my index finger nail under the needle to hold it in place while I tighten with the screw driver. Hugs Joyce

I allways stick my finger palm side up and hold the needle with my finger nail secure while I tighten the needle. Works great!!

Babylock offers such a device with their sergers. Very Clever little brush at one end, and a hole that holds the needle at the other. But, sometimes I am too lazy to dig it out and use still use my fingernail:>)

I use the tool that came with my Husqvarna-Viking Designer Topaz 30. it's called Multipurpose Tool/Button Reed. it looks exactly like the one shown by Sigrun. This tool is very handy and changing the needle is very easy and safe for your fingers. It's also useful when sewing jeans hems. Hugs, Lidia

I use a gadget I bought from the Janome shop. It has a needle threader at one end, and a needle inserting tool at the other end. It has a flat side so the needle is facing in the right direction.

I saw that was not sure if I should buy it!

greysewist by greysewist 23 Jun 2012

I bought it mostly for the needle threader initially as I was using a machine without one, but found the needle inserter good too, once I worked it out :)The needle can't fall downwards into your machine either.

I have one like bevintex shows, but mine is white and I got it with my serger. I don't usually use it with my sewing machine, but do with my serger - go figure!

I just use my fingers. But then, that is the way I've always done it. I have a needle inserter for my serger, but it has three needles in a row and no room for fingers. It just looks like a plastic stick with a hole in it. Good luck.

sigrun by sigrun 23 Jun 2012

Husqvarna DesignerI and Ruby - and it came with them both

gerryb by gerryb 23 Jun 2012

I love mine too. Really helps when your hands have arthritis! I think it's called a "hump jumper" as you also use it to go over thick spots...as in jeans.

drro by drro 23 Jun 2012

I have one of those devices for my old Viking. Each end is a different thickness; you rest the button on it under the pressure foot to deepen the sewn-shank of the button.

drro by drro 23 Jun 2012

I do not think mine has a hole init...I will have to check ~!

I have one. It's a blue plastic gadget that holds the needle for you and has a brush on the other end. I searched for it online but don't know what they call it. i think it's made by Clover. I LOVE it. Like having an extra hand. maybe someone knows the name. Cost about $1.29
