I'm going to re read all the comments again to try and digest all the helpful advise. then go and look at some of the lovely designs that are available. sorry if my image does not show up correctly
Welcome to "cute"
Sorry I do not have a brother, but see that you have been given answers.
Hugs Yvonne
Here is the link to the manual for ped basic (which I got to from my original link and at the top, clicking on ped basic in the links of the title). You can read in that all about it. Brother does make manuals and updates available easily on their sites.
Let me help convince you to buy PED Basic: I'm also limited to 4x4 designs and have a ton embedded in the machine itself, however with PED Basic you are then able to use designs you find on the net (either free or purchased) provided they are in the format you need (usually pes when you have a Brother). Yes it's a little pricey (I bought mine from ebay USA) however you'll find it awfully handy - just transfer the design to the card (which is also in the PED Basic box) and then pop the card in your machine and turn on and stitch. No I don't work for Brother but I do love mine lol. :) xXx
You make it sound so easy so I am now waiting for my PED Basic to arrive and am now looking for free designs to download
Good move, you won't be disappointed ;) and yes I expect you'll enjoy embroidering more when you have access to more designs :) xXx
If your machine needs a card, you only need to buy one card. You can use it over and over again. If it has a USB port, you can connect it directly to your computer/laptop or use a stick drive (which goes by other names such as a thumb drive). You would only need one of those too.
As others have explained, you have to download free design (or designs you purchase online or designs you purchase on a cd)to your computer first. These designs on your computer are referred to as "digital files." You send the files/designs to the Box and the Box writes them on the card. These Boxes usually have their own program so that when you plug them into your computer, they usually self-start and you can start transferring designs to them right away. Read the manual that comes with them so you know which buttons to click on!
If you have a USB port, all you need to do is trasfer your designs to your thumb drive. Make sure your designs are in .pes format!
and the Box transfers them to the card.
If you have a USB port, you just have to transfer them to the thumb drive. Make sure your files are in .pes format.
It sounds like you are just learning about how to fully utilize your ME machine. Once you figure out how to get designs from the computer to your machine, you may need more help with converting formats as someone mentioned below. When/if you get stuck at that point, please post again if more help is needed!

I tried to find the details for your machine, but had no luck. First question I have does it have a USB port? I have the brother se 400 and it has the USB port as well as the port for the card reader.
To save me the expense of a card reader and cards, I use the laptop to download the designs, free or not. I use True Sizer by Wings (free program) to view the designs, to change formats, to change sizes, to view color changes etc.
To send the designs to the sewing machine, when you go to open the design you want, don't open but go to the option send to, and the send to the sewing machine. the design will go the the download section of the sew machine file, wear you then can save it to the machine (great practice to get into in case of power outages or it you are going to use it many times, since once you turn off the sew machine the design disappears if not saved)
Anyhow this is only for the USB port option if you don't have the USB port and cord, you'll have to buy the card reader etc.
Hope this helps. :)
Found this link too! Has info for your machine, Good luck!
Hi! Here is the link to Brother, for the upgrade to 1.07 for PED Basic, do not dl from the cd included. Read all about it onsite. I have had this for my brother machine for quite a while. This is also a stand alone-meaning you can use it to view your pes files and familiarize yourself with it til you get the reader and card. Down the bottom of Cindy's page are links to 2 free programs (with some instructions) for viewing and converting files to pes. At secrets of, there is a link (and some info) as to how to keep track of the designs you save. From experience, start right from the beginning. It's good to know where you found things. And save sites in your favorites.
Anyone else? Have I covered the basics? Welcome, and have fun, it is addictive.
Jo
Many thanks Jo I will go and read the info you have given me I have found 2 PE BASICS not sure which would be best to buy one has other down loads with it the other just the basic I guess the first one is the best to go for
Which PED Basic you need depends on which Windows operating system you're running which is why there are several PED Basic download links on the Brother site :)
PED Basic box and cardwriter/card is precisely what you need. You load saved designs on your computer to the card in seconds. Holds many designs, but when you want diff ones, it erases the card to save new files. However, your designs are still saved in your computer for another time. You will need folders to categorize the many free designs you will be downloading!
Also you will want to download a free format changing program for the times designs are not in the .pes format. Have much fun!!
Welcome to the group. A card and reader would be a great feature for you to own.
Sorry but the link said the question was deleted so I have copied the answer for you instead.

I had this model and it uses memory cards only.
You will need to purchase a machine embroidery reader/writer unit with a rewritable memory card in the PES FORMAT.
Remember when you download designs from the Internet that the PE 150 has a limited hoop/embroidery area of 4 x 4.
I bought and used this reader/writer unit w/card from Allbrands.com - http://www.allbrands.com
PED Basic was not on the market then -

I have added the link below to AllBrands and they have PedBasic with card and box for $99.
I did a quick search of your machine and found the best answer to your query at the link below.
I do hope it helps you.
BTW, welcome to the world wide Cute Family, hope you enjoy your stay.

Welcome to Cute.
I have a Brother 190D and that uses memory cards too. I bought PEDbasic, which consist of a reader/writer box with a blank card plus the software to transfer downloaded designs to the card. It is not too expensive - a couple of Brother cards cost more - and it lets you use all the freebies you can download (and bought designs as well).
You'll use your machine more often when you have a choice of designs.
I download all designs to my laptop computer and store them in seperate folders from there they go to my machine via a USB port whenever I want to use them.
Welcome to Cute Embroidery. We are proud to have you with us. You are a professor of what?/Lillian
Welcome to the group. You can buy Brother Memory cards, however they are expensive. You might consider a program that you purchase for use on your PC and find out if you machine has a USB port. If so then you can use it and download designs from all sort of websites that design for machine embroidery and have a ball using them to make many projects.
Hi and Welcome to Cute. Brother memory cards are expensive. It would be cheaper for you to buy what has been suggested below with PE basic. Then you will be able to collect a huge selection of designs both free and bought which you can download onto the memory card with the PE basic. I use PE 8 which is more expensive but far more versatile. Happy sewing
The great designs here in Designs by Cuties ie others who come here are not on cards. We download in the format we use which is pes for you and I put the designs into my computer for use later. Designs to be sewn out by me go onto a blank memory card or a floppy disc. Some machines can have the design downloaded to it. This is not a feature of the machine you have. You have a great machine and have fun with it. Keep coming back and asking questions
First of all - welcome to Cute. My embroidery machine also works on a card system. I think you will find that you need something like a 'Magic Box', which converts files off the internet and downloads them on to a card. I have a magic box and this is how I manage to download. Buying cards for your machine is a very expensive business and very limited. Sarah (South Africa)
Somebody else will answer your query. In the meantime, I welcome you to Cute!
Hugs, Lidia
Once again thank you for your help I have found this on eBAY at what I think is a good price £94.26 I live in the UK is this what I need to buy for my Brother PE 150
Brother PED Basic Embroidery Design Transfer Box & Card
Lillian I reborn doll kits to resemble baby's, not sure if I'm allowed to insert this if not I apologise this is the link to my website
www.treetop-nursery.co.uk
You really need to buy a PED-Basic then you cold change you mind and make a new memory card. I also have an external hard drive to store my designs and pictures on only. I have so many designs now I can pick and choose whenever I want. I have been doing machine embroidery for 20 years and found this to be the best way to keep and not lose your designs.
Hugs Joann
Thank you for a warm welcome and the very quick replies, I'm not sure if it is cost effective for me to buy the extra machine that it looks like I need, as to be truthful I don't use my machine that often although I would not sell it.
I'm a professional Reborner and now and then like to embroider designs on baby garments. Built in patterns on my Brother PE 150 are very limited. I was really looking for a website that sold memory cards ready to use.
I was directed to your very friendly site by a friend I don't think she realised I do not have the means to transfer designs my self.
