Go back to the original posting, and there is the link to download the latest version of the software, which is what they want you to do. It might not be in the paperwork that comes with your unit, but it is on the website, and I have done that. Also, there is a link to dl the manual in pdf format, so you can read all about it.
No, you do not need the card reader attached to view files, or to open the software. They just need to be PES files. For other formats, you need the other free software that was posted .

good morning maisiebo.

Ped basic is a program with a card reader. The program will allow you to see icons of all of your Unzipped files if they are in the Pes design format. It will allow you to change the size of the design either 10% or 20%, i just can't remember which one. I haven't changed any sizes of designs because it can really mess them up, or so i have heard. You will also be able to print a template with the design so it will be easier to plan where to place it on your fabric.

The card reader is for hooking to your computer to get the design from the computer to your embroidery machine. It does not need to be hooked up until you are ready to transfer the designs.

Ped basic is not for creating designs at all. It is simply for getting designs from your comp to your embroidery machine.

If you have Windows 7 you should go to the Brother Web Site and download the fix before you install Ped Basic.

I hope this helps and I haven't confused you.

Thanks Deb, I just installed ped basic on a window 7 machine and it seems to be OK. I will check it out to make sure now.

you will only see the design images when in the 'basic' program..but there are free programs that allow you to view the images. With Basic tho, they are viewable whenever your files are opened.
