Silly question... Has anybody made the "FREE FANCIFUL FLOWER QUILT PROJECT" from Sew Swell? (Got to projects, click on the quilt in top right then click on the flower quilt project)The instructions say it needs 11 yards of material. This seems an awful lot to me. What do you think? Ta, Lyn. xx

Sounds about right. I've not made this one, but have made several like it. That's why quilters have stashes. I just fininshe a queen size quilt and if I added up how much fabric I used or the cost, I would probably choke. Buy what you need for the embroidery blocks and any additional yardage of the same fabric needed. Keep your eye out for sales and clearance fabrics. This will bring the price down.

It sounds like a lot, but it does take a lot of fabric to make a quilt. Please take time to figure out how much it will cost too before you start. You may want to start on the top, and then purchase in stages. Especially if you are using high quality quilting cotton. The price of cotton has gone waaaay up due to flooding and poor weather.

Quilters Cotton come 42/44 wide so 2.1/2yds will give you what you need for the 15 embroidered blocks, cut 3 wide by 5 from length. embroidery with appliqué will take time and you can add fabric for the nine patch as you go along.

That is about right, make sure you get extra If you have a mishap the chances are you will not be able to get any more of that fabric, what's over you will use for other items. The Quilt I am doing now takes 4.1/2yds 3.1/2yds and 3yds.3 colours without the backing.hope you can understand this..us a good iron on stabilizer.

Thanks for all the information on quilt measuring. Very interesting and what a huge job to do for a King size bed. Love to do one some time anyway.

I believe she is talking about 'total' amount of fabric needed. It sounds about right for a king size. It's simply a 9 patch with large squares with an embroidery. If you downsize the square size you won't need as much fabric. You can always add borders to make the quilt the size you need if you want to lessen the size of the blocks. Hope this helps....

Thanks for this grand link. Some lovely quilts and the Bed and Breakfast placement Tutorial is great.
Not sure for the amount of fabric for flower quilt but it might be about right, better safe than sorry when you run out of fabric. Some cotton fabrics are not very wide.
Happy Stitching!

That may be right. It would take 3 yards times 2 for the backing, if you are making a King size quilt. Aren't king sizes about 108 inches long by 10? inches wide? And because you need to make the embroidered squares bigger and then trim them down it would take some extra for that. That's a big quilt. :0)

This question had my interest and I think I misled you. I went back and I think she is talking about patchwork fabrics only, not backing, too. And it doesn't say what size it is. I googled how to calculate yardage and there are several places to look and 11 yards doesn't seem too far out the "ballpark". You have to allow for seam allowances, trimming, and binding. I probably shouldn't have tried to answer this question. About the only quilts I make are scrap quilts, so I don't have to calculate yardage too often. I guess after you do the math, you can hope to get your fabric on sale and if you have too much, make some pillows! It's a pretty quilt. Hope you have fun making it!!

Don't know where the rest of my comment went?? the yardage doesn't seem too far off. YOu have to calculate seams, trimming and binding. I mostly make scrap quilts - not much math needed.

I guess after you do the calculations you can hope for a sale and if you have too much, make pillows to match. It's a pretty quilt = Hope you have fun making it.

Thanks for your help. I too googled and found a few sites recomend 10 yards for a queen size front so 11 yards isn't far off. Not sure if I can afford to make this one.

Have you used poly cotton for a quilt?? This is cheap enough but I'm not sure if it's good enough. Thanks for your help. Lyn. xx
