I was wondering if anyone that has used vinyl what thickness did you use? I want to make a bug jar quilt for gs and tried out some but the vinyl can be pulled off! Maybe I did something wrong so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you all know there's an iron on vinyl? I haven't bought any yet so I can't say how it would work.

For the quilt you could try using organza for the bug jars, it is see through and might launder better than plastic vinyl.

I have 22 gauge vinyl. It is a medium density and have used it for ITH projects. Hoe to see your work in Projects. Live Laugh Download Stitch!

Made some and the vinyl did come off. I did buy some from Nancy's notion and that worked so far..

I haven't done one, but remember vinyl is like tear away stabilizer, your needle is punching holes into the edge to adhere the vinyl to the fabric. I suspect you'd have to use heavier weight vinyl, and make sure your design is digitized properly. If the needle punches holes too close together along the edge, it's going to tear away just like tear away stabilizer, has to be some little space between the stitches to leave the vinyl whole in order to be sewn to the fabric. Hope this makes sense. Do check out the tutorials at Embroidery Library, they have some really good ones, very easy to follow. Hugs, Marji

I, too, was thinking of doing this. Did some research, and this site sells 8 gauge, as does smartneedle for their bug jars.

Smartneedle has all the extras needed for their designs that I haven't been able to find here in the UK. I will have to bite the bullet soon and place an order and worry about the duty when it arrives. Jan

I made a bug shirt and got my vinyl from Walmart. It comes on a roll and apparently is used to cover furniture.;)

clever to put it on a shirt! my grands would love that. What did you do to keep the vinyl from pulling away?

jrob by jrob 15 Jul 2012

I just stitched the design on top and it was covered by the satin stitches. This design was from Smart Needle
http://www.smartneedle.com/BUGYAX... pretty sure there were instructions

jrob by jrob 15 Jul 2012

but the biggest thing was the satin stitches to attach the vinyl was doubled.

I have purchased vinyl to use to make photo insert pockets on the outside of totes, but have not stitched it yet. I believe I read that one cannot use a sharp needle, as it will cut the vinyl, at it stitches. So, I am guessing, a ballpoint needle would be used. Checkout the tutorials at Embroidery Library; I bet they have one on stitching on vinyl. Wish I could help you, but can't; maybe someone else can.
Hugs, Angel
