I live in Australia and ordered Mylar direct from Sharon last year. The price including freight was very reasonable and arrived quickly.
Very interesting.
Do you know the one mylar that is sell by Sharon can be washed?
I bought mine at heirlooms by Sharon. I like it so much I don't even want to try the dollar store stuff.
I haven't used either but have heard about both. I just wanted to comment: "What a great question" !
I do have a little giftshop and use gift wrapping plastic. And I have used Mylar for embroidery. The one I use for gift wrapping is less heavy and can rip very fast. the mylar is heavier and stays better in shape without ripping. So it's more expensive but I think the results are much better.
Thanks for asking the question, since I was really curious about it too. I didn't want to waste the money buying the wrapping paper if it worked as well as the embroidery. But it looks like the embroidery wins out. So thanks to all for your responses. It really helped me decide which to use.
*s 4 all for sharing your info. Thank you.
I used the mylar for embroidery which is after washing still great. no experience with giftpaper sorry
I tried both. The gift wrap is flimsy and pops out of the holes after it is stitched. It rips easily and some of it does not wash well orsome of it bleeds color when wet. I also bought the mylar to sew with. It is a dream thicker and stays put. No color run and looks great! My conclusion save the gift wrap for gifts and use the sewing mylar, you will be so much happier with the results. Suzanne
I am not an expert. I got lucky and purchased a roll of balloon mylar. I may glitter or paint on it before stitching. I have not purchased embroidery mylar - if there is a difference other than color from what I have. I do know that gift wrapping mylar is thinner and does not do well. As for washing mylar. It can be done, destruction of the mylar would depend mostly on the how many stitches and whether they are too close together to tear the mylar. I do not know if it can go into the clothes dryer. I hand wash my pieces. Live Laugh Download Stitch!
I know that some Mylars aren't washable so i dont know about the gift wrapping I would not use it in aon a washable project. I only use the opal coloured mylar that I can only buy from my local embroidery shop. hugs Joyce
