Today I plan to teach my granddaughter how to cross stitch...by hand.. I can't remember where you start ...Is it top to bottom?

In the middle or count down and start at the right hand corner

It's been a while, but I think I always started near the middle. If you do the darker colors first, the lighter colors stay clean.
