I just purchased some Christmas designs that call for silver metalic thread. If my machine doesn't tolerate it would white or a silver poly look ok?

My machine is very cantankerous and I can't even use Rayon thread.

Any suggestions?

The Emb Store sells Kingstar Metallic thread.
Link below.

You might try to lower your top thread tension down just a bit when using Metallic thread and use a Schmetz Metallic Needle or an Organ Large eyed Needle 15x1ST. Try a size 80/12 in these for Metallic thread.
Slow your machine down if possible when stitching with metallic thread.

I would add my 2 cents - but it seems you have enough suggestions to work with. Hehehe!

Thanks to all of you for the suggestions. I am going to try some of them. I hope it works. I would like to be able to use it for accents where needed.

I use a titanium needle and use a Pringle Chips container with a hole in the lid. Make a very small hole and thread the metalic thread through. Also hold the thread between your fingers to keep it tight, just not too tight. It works for me and my lady that gives me lessons taught me this technic

When using the metalic thread, put it a distance away from the machine. I have a separate spool holder and set it at least a foot away then thread the machine. The thread needs to relax so making it travel a distance lets it do just that. Slow the machine down, use a metalic needle and you can also spray it with silicone or dribble some sewer's aid on the spool of thread before you begin. Your tension may need to be set a little looser also.
Hope this helps. Good luck

There must be something that needs adjustment if you can't use rayon thread. That has been the norm for years. But for metallics Madeira, metallic needle, slow speed, same thread in bobbin, usually works for me. Other than that, the silver should work out.

If you don't want to mess with the metallic, I think the white or silvery white would work just fine. Be careful though that it won't 'get lost' in the rest of the design, like if it's supposed to be a metallic bling accent on top of something that's already white or very light color. Did you get it from Embroidery Library? I saw some in the Christmas Club sale that called for metallic, they were really really nice looking. Best of luck, Marji

Yes, it was from Emb. Lib. The reindeer and the snowflake swirls.

Maybe it just needs tension fiddled with or the placing of the cone of thread and/or a needle with a larger eye. And yes, the big one is often slowing the speed down too. All of these things may help. King Star thread is often used by people whose machine won't otherwise tolerate it though, as laffma1 says :) Which machine do you use?

I don't know which brand of machine you own, but if you haven't yet tried it, take a look at KingStar Metalic threads. They are great, and don't cause any problems for most machines. I use this for the bobbin as well as the top thread, and have never had an issue. Other thread brands have cause me many headaches, but not the KingStar. Good luck.

Where do you get King Star? I've never heard of it, but someone else suggested it also.

Make sure you have a metallic needle and slow down
the speed on your machine. Try the metallic thread
it might work. Good luck. Maureen

This is what I do and that works fine, also holding the thread carefully between your fingers to hold it tight but not too tight. Do try this. Good luck

I think white or silver thread would work well. You just would not have the glittery look of the metalic.
