Thank you so very much for doing this for us. I look forward to seeing the quilts. I hope you consider doing this again for us.
I SURE HOPE YOU ENJOYED DOING THIS...IT BECOMES EASIER AS YOU GO AND IS REALLY A WONDERFUL QUILT PATTERN TO USE...BY ADDING MORE BLOCKS AND CHANGING YOUR FABRIC...THE DESSIGN CAN BE USED FOR EVERY OCCASION...
I SEE CHRISTMAS PRINTS, EMBROIDERED WITH RED POINSETTAS...
I SEE EASTER---USING RELIGIOUS DESIGNS OR EASTER BUNNIES AND EGGS...
I SEE HALLOWEEN IN ORANGE, PURPLES, BLACK, YELLOWS, WITH GHOSTS, PUMPKINS ETC...
AND THEN THERE IS THE ONE LIKE MINE GOING TO A VERY SPECIAL LADY....
I WILL POST A LINK FOR YOU TO SHARE YOUR QUILT ON FRIDAY...THANKS FOR JOINING IN ON THIS...
BORDERS....
BORDER #1...this border will be cut at 2 inch strips...
Border # 2..this border is cut at 4 1/2 inch strips...
***BEFORE you cut out your border...lay your quilt out and try different layouts...You can add another color here......if you are going to embroider in your border...do not choose a to light of a color for border 1...
I laid you fabric below my blocks to figure out the best choices for me...and to see if what i thought might work really looked good.
you may want to look at what you are using for backing color and bring this forward into Border #1
(if you are using the same type of material on the back as the front.
Once you have your borders on and have embroidered
(if you wish) then your quilt will be done...you now have a baby blanket size quilt...
my blocks are not sewn together yet..this is not my baby blanket to show....
you can see how i rarrange my material to get different looks from the borders...
#1--I introduced another teal fabric as a big border and went with the white...I still can embroider my words in the dark sash on main block which would make it all come together...
#2--using a new teal print slightly differen, it gives my other colord prints a pattern of floating around. it is very little difference, but not the same as my light teal...
#3-- I introduced a darker brown, which sttod out from my other brown/teal...it gives your inner blocks a confined grouping...
#4--by using my floweref brown material, i again give my lighter colored blocks a chance to stand out seperately...
#5--is using all my colors and not adding anything different...light colored border to give my blocks distinction...
#6--by bringing the pink into the border, it will soften it some, but making sure my squares are blunt..
#7--i think i am going to go with this one...i added another smaller borderbecause i wanted the pink out there, but not next to my blocks...
this quilt is going to be slightly larger than a lap quilt, so adding to my borders will help make it larger...
come together...
#2--i introduced a new fabric, a soft teal, different but almost close..
#3--i introduced a dark brown to set off my block area..
#4--using my brown/teal as part of border.
#5--using my light teal that is in block 1
#6--bringing out the pink into the border
#7--using white and pink as 2 smaller borders, and introducing the new light teal...I am going to go with this one as it is a bigger quilt instead of the baby one...
block #1.
#6--bringing out the pink.
#7-- adding 2 smaller borders and new teal large border...I am going with this one as my quilt it bigger not baby size...
when you have completed all 4 rows...sew them all together...swapping rows back and forth..image 1-image 2-image 1- image 2 or vice versa..whichever you want..be very careful to line your corners up exactly...it will show if they are not tightly sewn to match evenly....
SEWING YOUR BLOCKS TOGETHER.
seperateyour blocks into 4 piles....2 each per pile...these will become your 4 rows....sew blocks together as seen below...
CAUTION...be sure keep your block 2 sewn with the sides next to block 1.(should be no seam on block 2...see picture above...
sew 2 each of above rows...
BLOCK 2 PART 3
sewing your block.. sew your strip piece to the top of your block..repaet the bottom...YOU WANT TO SEW THE SIDES LAST...
YOUR BLOCK IN SONE..PRESS SEAMS..
if you want to embroidery on it, you can do so at this point or you can wait till its all put together...i do after it is all put together then i embroidery in it...whatever makes you comfortable...
Can you use a stripe fabric for the Stripe pieces? My choice for the last fabric was a green and white stripe. Thanks for helping me.
that should say can you use stripe for the strip to go around the white block to be embroiered?
if you want to...however, you will have to cut some strips going across and some going down so when you sew the, they will all be going one way. easy way to do this is to open up your stripped msterial...lay your big block in the center...see how it looks on the sides and on the top...you will want to achieve that look...hugs deanna
thats see how it looks..i will post a picture in another link for you in a second...
BLOCK #2 PART 2
cut your dark material out into strips 1 1/2 inches wide...cut 3 strips at this time...you may need to cut more later...
this should be your last material of the 5
and the one to make your large square...it will be used for the border around your bloke...PLEASE DO NOT SEW THEM ON YET...
TYPING IS BAD...SORRY...MEANT TO SAY IT IS THE ONE TO MAKE YOUR BLOCK POP OUT OR SOME MIGHT SAY STAND OUT...I would lay this one up against Block 1 and see if it really is bold enough before you cut it up
BLOCK #2 PART 1
you will need (8) 6 1/2 inch by 6 1/2 inch blocks
If you are using fabrics with special prints..fuzzy cut your print out so that your designs are centered within the measurement. If your design does not leave you with 1/4 inch sewing all around, you might want to figure something else out, otherwise it will not look correctly.
if you are embroidering, you can strip cut out your blocks since there isn't prints to worry about. (much easier)
if you are embroidering...go ahead and cut your squares out...when you are done, they will be big enough to fit your 4x4 hoop...hugs
I coppied and pasted all instructions (in order) into Word, and am keeping it in Mystery Quilt File! Hugs, Judy & Thanx!
I am too. I copied based on block 1 part xyz and so on. Then I read the comments and add then ones I need to the instructions. I want to use them in the future and I'm afraid I might not remember.
Hi,I am having a hard time working out what I need,
It seems to have been chopped up with everyone thanking you,not your fault, but is hard to follow,a post on its own would be better, could cuties thank you on the next post, it would leave instructions complete just a suggestion I am very grateful. Thank you.
I am very grateful for the inst. But I feel the same way as above, difficult to follow inst. Thank you.
CUTIES: VERY IMPORTANT....
how you do your first block, all your blocks must look the same...do not swap your colors around
..
for instance top-brown on left teal on right
bottom-teal on left, brown on right...all 8 of my blocks will need to be sewn the same....HAPPY BLOCKING...
I finally found the instructions today. This sounded like fun when I read about it the other day. When or how often do you plan on posting blocks? I don't want to miss any once I get started. Will block 2 be here or in a post of it's own? Thanks for taking the time and effort to do this project. It will be fun to see all the finished quilts. Hugs, Susan
i am posting as i finish mine...trying to give you reasonable time to complete yours in...
BLOCK 1 FINAL ASSEMBLY
laying out your pieces, match your colors to lay like this...this is where you will pick your patterns (on your fabrics) and the way your fabrics flow..you want them to look good together when sewn. sew one side together...sew the other side together..
CONGRATS..YOU JUST FINISHED BLOCK 1 DESIGN...YOU NEED 8 OF THESE BLOCKS FOR YOUR QUILT
BLOCK 1 PART 3
*CAUTION before cutting and sewing...watch how your fabric print is laying...make sure your print will be facing up when cutting the 4 1/2 in strip across..see picture below....(you can see the floral with the stem is upright...your print should be upright
using light and dark materials again...cut strips of each color 4 1/2 inches wide. sew 1/4 inch seam right sides together...cut into 3 inch wide pieces...total of 16 needed.
*Caution if you have a definite pring..sew only enough strips to cut the 8 3 inch wide pieces. You will need to rever the seam to the other side for the other 8 pieces..see diagram of final below
press seams open
you now have pieces that are 3 inches wide and 8 1/2 inches long if done correctly
BLOCK 1 PART 3
sewing your pieces together...attathed your stripped pieces to your 3 1/2 inch block...* it does not matter which goes first on top--brown/teal or teal/brown...just as long as you are opposite on bottom...
*CAUTION...if your material has the top/bottom designs, then this is where you need to check to make sure your stripped piece is facing the right way.....as you can see belowi tried to lay mine out where it looks like the majority of the brown faced up...my lower bottom one attatched sortof swirled out towards the side, thats ok because my print does have florals moving around.
DO ALL 8 OF YOUR BLOCKS TO LOOK LIKE THE ONE ON THE RIGHT.
BLOCK 1 PART 2...
from your light colored fabric and your darker one...Cut a 2 inch strip from each...
right sides together...sew 1/4 in down one side...
open it up and press hem flat...
cut your strip into 3 inch lengths..
you will need 16 total when finished...see final picture below.
*CAUTION...IF YOU HAVE A PRINT THAT HAS A PATTERN AND THERE IS A TOP AND BOTTOM TO THE PATTERN(ANIMALS, VEHICLES, PEOPLE, FLORAL WITH STEMS ETC)..BE SURE TO CUT YOUR 2 INCH STRIP LENGTH WISE OF YOUR FABRIC. THIS IS SO YOUR IMAGE WILL BE UP AND DOWN AND NOT SIDEWAYS...IF THIS IS YOUR CASE...YOU NEED TO SEW RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER FOR ENOUGH TO CUT ONLY 8 OF YOUR 3 INCH BLOCKS...YOU WILL NEED TO SEW YOUR STRIPS OPPOSITE OF THE LAST ONE SO WHEN YOU OPEN THE OTHER 8 THEY WILL BE DIFFERENT FROM THE FIRST 8...EXAMPLE WILL BE SMALL PIECE CUT IN IMAGE BELOW--BROWN ON RIGHT/TEAL ON LEFT...YOUR SECOND SET NEEDS TO BE TEAL ON RIGHT AND BROWN ON LEFT...QUESTIONS JUST ASK...
2" strips sewn right sides together...
middle is it opened and pressed
last is cut into 3 inch lengths..need 16 total
I hope you all have gotten your first part done....(8) 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 blocks....next step coming...
I have copied and pasted all instructions into word and will keep them in a folder for future reference
i cannot start it right away as my friend wants a quilt for her new little girl G child so she will need to select the fabric.
However, i will follow this very closely and then do and post.
thank you so much for all the time and hard work. annnie
I have done the same as I have family visiting but would like to make the quilt in a few weeks. G
I have to get in on this one ... hehehe
New grandbaby due November....IT'S A GIRL ! ! !
Hugs and happy to see you..
Linda
This sounds like a good idea and lots of fun. May I suggest, if you haven't already thought of it, to either make a folder in your bookmarks for this mystery quilt, or copy & paste the posts into a Word document, so you will be able to go back in case you miss or mess up (that would be me, hee hee) the instructions. It would be easier to find that way. Good luck to all quilters! Hugs, Marji
could this be a lap quilt for our self as appossed to a baby quilt? If we choose fabric colours for our self. thanks Kezza
Does the material have to be cotton quilting fabric or is it possible to use other kinds of material
cutting..getting started....
block 1.... accent block...(mine leight teal,brown, pink...
from the fabric YOU CHOSE as the least amount in quilt...(can use in borderif you choose later on). cut 8 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch blocks...Easier way is to cut a strip 3 1/2 inches wide then cut into 3 1/2 lengths thus creating 3 1/2 inch blocks...
SORRY, MY HUBBY MESSED UP MY CAMERA... HOWEVER AS YOU CAN SEE BY MY CHOICES, THIS IS WHAT I MEAN..THE DARKER TEAL IS FOR NUMBER 2...I HAVE CHOSEN TO EMBROIDERY, SO I PICKED WHITE AS MY MAIN FOCAL...THE LIGHT TEAL THE BROWN/TEAL AND THE PINK ARE MY OTHER 3 TPO MATCH...HOPE THIS HELPS YOU DECIDE EASIER.
AMOUNTS NEEDED....
WHITE--- (MAIN & border) 2 YARDS
DARK TEAL---1/2 TO 2 YARDS...(IN BORDER?)
PINK--- ENOUGH TO DO 8 3 1/2 IN BLOCKS
LIGHT TEAL---UP TO 2 YDS (BORDER?)
BROWN/TEAL---UP TO 2 YDS (BORDER)
I CANNOT GIVE YOU EXACT, BECAUSE I DO NOT KNOW WHICH ONES YOU WANT TO ADD INTO BORDERS AND WHICH ONES YOU WANT FOR JUST BLOCKS....WE ARE DOING A BABY SIZE VERSION FIRST..YOU CAN ALWAYS ADD MORE BLOCKS TO MAKE IT BIGGER ONCE YOU SEE IT ALL TOGETHER FOR OTHER SIZE QUILTS...I AM SORRY I CANNOT GIVE YOU DIRECTTIONS BETTER HOWEVER EVERYONE WILL CHOSE THEIRS AND THEIR BORDER COLORS DIFFERENTLY
BECAUSE YOU MAY CHOSE YOUR BORDERS FROM ANY OF THE FABRICS...WE ARE DOING A BABY SIZE QUILT FIRST...YOU CAN USE THE PATTERN TO MAKE BIGGER FROM THERE...
Great. I have been getting fabric, ready to start a quilt.. so thank you.. here we all go.. woo hoo.. First of many I hope.
Hugs pam.
Going away for the weekend. Will start when I get home. Are you going to have the instruction in this stream or starting a special one just for instructions
Our expected GS will be due early January.
So I am hoping this will be his quilt.
I have not found one from all my colections yet.
Thank you and Hugs Bev
DAY 1...CHOOSING YOUR FABRIC....
YOU NEED 5 CORDINATING FABRICS....
IF YOU CHOOSE TO EMBROIDERY IN YOUR QUILT...PLEASE USE A VERY LIGHT OR WHITE COLORED FABRIC AS ONE OF YOUR CHOICES...IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO EMBROIDERY..PLEASE CHOOSE A FABRIC THAT WILL BE A MAIN FOCAL POINT.
CHOSE A FABRIC THAT IS DARKER AND WILL COMPLIMENT THIS MAIN ONE...THIS FABRIC NEEDS TO BE ONE THAT WILL MAKE THIS POP OUT.
THE NEXT 3 FABRICS NEED TO COMPLIMENT THE OTHER 2..HOWEVER THEY NEED TO GO REALLY WELL TOGETHER ALSO...FOR THIS BLOCK, YOU NEED 1 LIGHTER ONE..1 DARKER ONE, AND 1 THAT WILL BE USED VERY LITTLE, BUT MAKES THE OTHER 2 OFFSET...FOR INSTANCE I USED A LIGHT TEAL..A BROWN/TEAL AND FOR MY 3RD I USED A PINK...
Ha, ha Deanna. Truly a mystery. Will come back later and check.
