They are easy to do measure the length then the width add your seam al' and then measure how thick add seam al' top stitch to help it lay flat, make a 3" strip for the book cover to slide into before sewing this hem it. lay all out flat and create abias binding for top and bottom only sew this and hand stitch it. I will post one on the project page I did perhaps looking at it alone with these dirictions will give you some help.
About.com has some really good sewing patterns. The zippered book cover is attached, but they have lots of patterns, from purses and bags to costumes and beyond. Free too! Good luck.
Well, it cut off the directions to that specific item. But it is easy enough to find if you look at the index. I want to make one of these!!
Maybe one of these from moose would work for you. Every thing I have made from moose has stitched perfectly.
Also there is a site called something like " hand and heart". Or hand to heart. That I am pretty sure has free instructions and also a free design to,use on it also but I can't rember, the URL maybe someone else will remember the link I am thinking of. All her designs are free.
I use a piece of tear-away stabiliser to make a pattern - just fold it around your book making 2-3 inch flaps, score the top, bottom and along the spine; mark the middle of the front (drawing diagonals) - nice to have if you want to embroider. Write the name of the book or planner on it and you have your perfect pattern.
After embellishing, embroidering or whatever line the whole piece stitching the uprights only, turn and press. Cut a second piece of lining the size of the folded cover.
Now place the cover face up, fold the flaps in and place the lining on top, stitch the bottom first, then if wished place a ribbon between the layers and stitch the top (that way you don't accidentally stitch the ribbon in the bottom seam - don't ask me how I know). Clip the corners. Turn right side out, then turn the flaps. Your cover is beautifully lined (and so easily stitched together with 4 straight seams).
For a church fair I stitched 6 different sizes (hymnbook, bible, bible+hymns all 3 in medium and small) and still have the 6 patterns - nicely marked - which I've used several times for back orders.
Great instructions, thank you so much! I never thought of using tear-away stabiliser for a pattern.
www.abc-machine-embroidery-designs.com/ and www.AnnaBoveEmbroidery.com
Both have beautiful designs. AnnaBove has a complete cover set: front, front flap, back and back flap and the spine.
Good Luck.
Oops. I misread your question. I thought you were looking for designs for bible covers. I'm still in sleep mode...
Thats great info! I have many friends whom would love this as well, thank you!
