Hmmm...we once went to Florida to visit relatives and wound up buying a small pop-up camper and I FILLED it with fabric as it was so much cheaper than where we lived in the north. It wasn't very much per yard but I certain bought a huge quantity!! Well..and then later I bought a craft/fabric store!! Am I a fabriholic!?!?!
Here in Australia good quality quilting fabric usually american costs between $24:50 and $29:50 a metre which is 1yard and 3inches. $3:00 fabric available here (usually chinese or indian made) is not worth taking out of the shop. Hugs Joyce
I just hate paying alot for fabric - but I do know that prices have gone sky high - but I don't have alot that I am not using in a stash, either.
Will you all please stop taunting those of us in the UK?!!!!!
You're probably buying really high quality, Sue, from your local mills -feel any better?
I buy on line from Nancys Notions in America and the fabric is still cheaper even with shiping than buying it here in Australia. Joyce
The Mills all closed in the 70s most of the fabric I see is from the States or India
I think about $45NZ metre, but that was dupion silk. Some fabrics are a lot more than that. I was looking at some that was nearly $90NZ but I couldn't justify paying that much.
I was in Florida in March & I bought 60" wide batik backing fabric & I paid $14.99 a yard & yes it was sew worth it. I think it is just rich with saturated color. If you want to buy really good name brand fabric @ our local quilt store then you pay $14.99-17.99 a meter & I have seen some @ $23.99 a meter. She has her fabric on sale in the summer for $10.99 a meter & she sells Robert Kauffman, Fusion & fancy names like that. If I really really like something there I will buy it But I like to wait for it to hit the clearence bin if I can
The two most expensive fabric's were by Amy Butler and Cath Kidson one was £16m I just fell in love with it, I keep saving them for something special, here in U.K.about £10 is average I Have no local shops to pick up bargains, but at the shows sometimes you can pick up fabric £5m
WOW THAT IS LIKE $24.58 A METER IN AMERICAN DOLLARS WOWOWOWOWOWOW!!!!!! I guess we shouldn't whine sew much about our prices? YIKES! i just checked to see how much a pound L is in US funds & it is equal to $1.5657, WOWOW
I spent $12.00 a yard for some fabric I had to have. 100% cotton. Good fabric runs around $8-$9 a yard
There is a lady that comes here to the camp from the States (Florida)and brings boxs of fabric and she charges 5 dollars a yard and i know there stuff here would cost 18-20!!Thats the most i ever pay and her fat quarters are still one dollar.hugs carolyn
not all fabric in Florida is in-expensive, I was there in MArch & I bought 60" wide batik backing fabric & I paid $14.99 a yard & yes it was sew worth it
It depends a lot on what I'm making,if it is a gift for someone else I would pay more for the fabric. I believe quality material gives you a quality product. Stock up when you see a sale. But Cuties do that anyway
I buy on sale most of the time. Quilt shop fabric is expensive, but if it's of good quality it's worth it for quilts. Connecting Threads has good quality cotton quilting fabric for about $6/yd, and they have gorgous batiks. On line I wouldn't pay the price, because there's shipping added, and I can't feel it, see the color properly, etc. I'll take a chance on sale stuff, but the fabric shops are still my favorite place, because of the physical presence of the fabric: addicted, I guess. Cotton prices have really gone up, that's been a problem for a while now. I couldn't afford to make "quilt shop" fabric quilts, unless I could sell them for lots of money. Since that'll never happen, I'll settle for sales, WalMart, fabric.com & Connecting Threads. Sometimes I come across a fabric I can't live without, hee hee hee, but then I usually get just a quarter or half yard, just so I can hug it, I suppose. Looking through my stash makes me happy, I don't have to actually DO anything with it. I guess that would be an addiction, like all the designs I have stashed for a 'rainy day'. But at least designs don't take up any room! Hugs, Marji
I do have a few favorite vendors on ebay but I hate it when the fabric is a great price and they nail you on the shipping.
I have the same problem with online fabric. You can't see/feel the fabric so you don't know the quality you are getting. I only order brand name fabric online so I know the quality I get.
Quilting fabric 100% cotton is very expensive cos of the quilting popularity. A mini fortune at the quilting shops.+_ R95.00 per meter.
Have to be selective when choosing and careful in cutting.
Other fabrics are more reasonable.
I don't spend a lot on my fabrics now adays. When I was younger I spend $10-$12 for some velvet that I thought I had to have. I AM A FABRICAHOLIC and I make NO EXCUSES FOR IT :) *2U
I have paid $30/yd for a brocade I liked...but in the cottons I go as high as $12 sometimes if I really really like it and it's good quality. You have to know your fabrics. Sometimes $3 a yd. is ok...sometimes it's not. And sometimes you just have to have it!!!
The price of cotton has gone up a lot and with the drought, it will probably go up even more. The more threads per square inch, the more expensive it is too. I always buy high quilt quality cotton as I know any left overs will go into a quilt eventually and they need to stand up to use. I usually pay in the $8-$10 range. The last purchase I made I paid $12 a yard for a beautiful piece, and made aprons out of it. With no ME on them, they all sold right out first, Go figure.
