Thoughts about cushions (or pillows!) The secret sister details have all gone out now. Some people have not given much detail about their likes and dislikes. So, how about telling us here what your ideal cushion would be like. Anyone can contribute - you don't have to be part of the exchange!

I have received a gift but it has me confused. It is an apron, not a pillow. I have not participated in any apron exchanges, only this one, so it has to be for this. The apron is very nice. I will post a picture later.

Thank you for all the great ideas posted!!!
We have a three-season cottage-type room, which we call "The Looney Bin". It's theme is loons [duh?], and the colours are olive green, creamy off-white and grey.
P.S. Obviously, we love laughing!!!

wish i had a cottage room all to myself..my dh made me a 21'x21'sewing room...he moved his tv, recliner and coffee table in there...then turns around and tells me i need to clean up my sewing mess...I thought that was my room...hehehehe

meganne by meganne 20 Aug 2012

Now THIS is a fantastic response, your SS should have a great idea of your colours and I guess if it was something with a funny design it would fit in really well.
Good onyer!!! hugs, Meg

What a fun room - I bet you get a LOONEY cushion for it, too.

I don't remember what I put down for my pillow choice so if my secret sister hasn't already started a pillow herz is my wish. Not frilly or lacey, jewel tones of wine/burgandy, gold etc, My Christmas colors are those colors too. A zipper would be a plus but not necessary because some do not like to do zippers. I'm glad that this thread was started because it totally changed what I was going to make after I saw what my secret sister liked. I had picked out a completely different color scheme for her pillow so it was back to the store again.

Hi Secret Sister, I want this cushion to be your imagination, style, and color, because no one gives me handmade items. My family and friends expect handmade items from me, but they don’t give me any handmade items. I will tell you something about me. I have a mini farm and rescue donkeys, dwarf goats, and chickens and love bright colors. I will appreciate any thing you make for me, because it thought and love you put in this cushion.

this cushion cover will go to my sewing room. The walls are orchid. I have pegboards and cork board on the walls, and they are full of papers. My pegboards are full of rulers and such. I do like fabric that has sewing type designs on it. (bobbins, buttons, sewing thread, etc.

I'm not really fussed at all, but my favourites would be earthy colours like Sue's or blues or greens, but I like best to be surprised. The more fun or interesting techniques used, the better. Especially as we all enjoy seeing the photos when they're put up. Marji a monkey would be very much at home in this house but whoever has redbacks or any other spiders, you can keep em, thanks!

I'm not doing this swap, but thought I'd put my 2 cents worth in. I understand exactly what Meganne is saying, I just hate to guess what kind of design somebody would like, it's scary! Now me, I'm easy, a cat. Or several cats. Big or small. But, I secretly hate monkeys. Not, I suppose, that you'd put monkeys on a cushion, but you never know. I just love Lilylady's answer, "a cardinal on a branch in red & green"--gotcha!! That makes it so easy. You can choose the style & which design, but with those kind of directions you can't go wrong. Maybe, if you can't pin down exactly what you like, at least say what you'd really NOT like, like monkeys. I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone gets, you are all so talented and creative. Hugs, Marji

Oh Marji, I am totally not creative! I am a monkey see, monkey can do. LOL!!!
But this monkey can't think up projects for trying.
I don't even know what kind of fabric to use to make a cushion for someone else, all of mine are either lace or satin, though a special friend recently sent me two beautiful corduroy cushions with cats embroidered on them and I just love them so much.

I had hoped that I gave good enough color scheme ideas for the SS, but just in case, and since DH does not like pillows on the bed - we can stick to the living room....My colors are in beige and greens, with touch of gold and coral...I like cottage look designs. My family room was done by my husband, so it is done in browns, and blues..mostly leather furniture and no florals. Hopefully I have given enough information....good luck to all SS doing this fun project.

I don't however like the traditional green & reds! I do like blues & silvers & I love snowmen too!!!! I do up my living room every year & it is pretty fancy looking (or sew I have been told) & I love it! I love the Victorian style but only @ Christmas time! I am sure that I will love it regardless as it was made just with me in mind! Hugs Loralye

Hello Cuties! I think I gave some good ideas in my original e-mail, but reading through this, I did forget to mentoin that I, too, would like to be able to remove the cover and wash (no husband, but a slobbery dog and a hairy cat !!) I would use the cushion for my bedroom on my rocking chair which right now is totally naked (not a good look for me, either LOL). Light pink, lavendar, and light beige is my color scheme but even with that please do not limit yourself. If you have something in mind you would like to make, please do. I would be most grateful for anything handmade by my SS. I am usually the one giving and not getting back because I don't really have anyone near me who sews so I would absolutely, positively, without a doubt LOVE LOVE LOVE anything my SS wants to make for me. Thanks for listening. Hugs to all. Lois W.

Gee! SHEESH! Golly and Gosh! Do you ever get the feeling you are trying to pull hen's teeth?????
I am the world's worst at coming up with ideas, I can never decide what to do, what to make and I get physically sick to my stomach with worry that my SS won't like what I come up with.
I may sound like I am all confident and creative but believe me I am not.
If my recipient hasn't given enough info to help me make her something she will truly love, enough to keep and display, then I come to Cute and start begging you all not to be so stingy with expressing your likes and dislikes.

So here I am, BEGGING for understanding, nobody likes admitting they have no imagination, but now you all now, I'm a realist with absolutely no imagination and I need my SS to state OUTRIGHT....

PLEASE, what kind of design would you like on your cushion?
What would you love, more than anything?
Whatever the design, I can create it if it doesn't exist, but I can't read minds.
I know your colours but that isn't enough and all I want is for you to be thrilled with your cushion.
Meganne

I hope I gave my SS enough info. Really though I am not picky. I like almost everything. My bedroom is turquoise and kinda lime green. I love all of them, I would count myself blessed if I got any one of them. I love pillows, I have them all over the house. I even have them on the door knobs. I made one just the other day for my bed. I think I posted it in projects here, but I am not sure. I'll look and if I can can not find it. I will post it again. As for my ideal pillow would be one of fall colors, or Christmas. fall I do greens, golds, orange, off whites, wine reds,. Please no Halloween, I decorate for fall Sept.1 and keep it up till day after Thanksgiving. So witchs and ghosts are out.
As for Christmas I decorate with the old colors of Red and Greens, any thing about the birth of Jesus.
Santa, Snowmen ( snowmen I keep out till March). And of course any thing angels.

I love throw pillows and make a lot. I change them out by the season.
Living room is in creams/mauves/jades/with a tiny bit of blue and red...and I have several oriental carvings and items in there. Right now I am in the process of doing some oriental designs on pillows.
Bedroom is ocean themed - and have just completed a set of sea shell pillows, and blue work sailing ships.
I tend to prefer tailord pillows with piping.... seldom do ruffles anymore.

Thank you Sue for doing thid for us - a cushion of my choice would be mainly neutral in colour (love calico/homespun/shade on shade fabrics) and the use of highlight fabrics in terracotta, dark reds, olive greens, mustard yellows, dark blue. I really do favour Australian prints/colours and embroidery designs. Like plain, simple lines like strips/borders/blocks or patchwork- maybe a featured square in centre and like one colour redwork designs, the use of variegated thread or shades of the one colour in embroidry designs.
I'm not fussed with lacy, frilly, busy looking cushions, embroidered medallions and ....even though I love cows(has to be real ones) I don't like them on any decor items. Hope this helps - I'm sure I will love what my SS makes for me.

So Ruth you don't care what is on it? If someone put an outhouse or a dunny pan on your cushion you would be ecstatically happy with it??? LOL!!!!

shirlener88 by shirlener88 13 Aug 2012

I have lots of idea's of what would be pretty in those shades and I am not thinking outhouses or a dunny pan, at all. I think it is special that you would want to put it in your caravan for traveling, too.

grafiau by grafiau 16 Aug 2012

Actually Meganne the outhouses and dunnies from Glen Harris are great, and I am in the process of doing a whole series of them for our stall, and although they wouldnt fit with teal etc, they would be appropriate for a caravan trip wouldnt they, lol. Perhaps I should elaborate, I like small flowers, and japanese designs, not Kanji, but bonsai's, geisha's and the like, abstract designs (art deco) willow pattern, and varigated thread designs. I hope that helps my S.S. Cheers Ruth

meganne by meganne 16 Aug 2012

Oh Ruth, you are so funny, I actually thought that when I wrote it. Polly made an outhouse design to hang on their caravan door, that's what made me think of it. My Dad and uncle used to photgraph every different outhouse they saw on their trips, it was quite amusing viewing.
