Thank you for taking the time to create a tutorial! That was very generous of you. I LOVE your quilt!! I'm going to save your instructions and create one of my own!
LAYING OUT YOUR BLOCKS....LOOK AT THE VERY LAST PICTURE HERE...as you can see by turning your blocks around differently, your white stripa actually lay out as sashings around your colored blocks....
PUTING ON YOUR LAST 2 PIECES OF LIGHT FABRIC...
LAYING YOUR BLOCK OUT AS SEEN IN IMAGE 1. place your 14" piece underneath....right sides together sew 1/4" seams..press open
as seen in IMAGE 2...sew your 16 1/2" piece right sides together...press seams...
YOU SHOULD HAVE YOUR COMPLETED BLOCK AS SEEN IN IMAGE 4...
go ahead and make some more with your other fabrics...reversing your colors the other way...swapping colors around...
ACCIDENTLY DOUBLED UP ON IMAGES 2 AND 3...what do you expect at 2 am...hehehehe
FINISHING YOUR BLOCK....
using your 2 last pieces of color 1 and your (2) 4 x 4 1/2 pieces of your light color...sew one to each other right sides together ...see images 1 and 2....
NEXT
Lay your block out as in IMAGE 3...placing the smaller of the two you just finish sewing, underneath the block....right sides together, sew them together as seen in IMAGE 4...press seams
NEXT
place your other piece next to your new block as seen in IMAGE 5...sew right sides together...press seams....your block should now look like IMAGE 6...
DAY 4
SEWING YOUR INNER BLOCKS TOGETHER
ALL SEAMS 1/4"
place your 4" blocks down(this is where you place your pattern up and down, if you have one) to the right side of your block sew your 2" x 4" light colored fabric together..hand press seam....image 1 thru 4...
NEXT..
taking your color 2 (4) pieces...set the 2 3"x 5 1/2" pieces on each side of your block...sew accordingly...hand press seams open.....see image 5
NEXT
place your 3" x 10 1/2" pieces in place...sew accordingly...see image 6
YOUR BLOCK SHOULD END UP LOOKING LIKE IMAGE 7...
YOU CAN DO A FEW OTHERS UP TO THS POINT USING YOUR DIFFERENT COLORS YOU HAVE CHOSEN...PLEASE REMEMBER TO KEEP YOUR COLORS FOR EACH BLOCK YOU DO WITH THAT
BLOCK...example, i will need to keep my color 1 other 2 pieces i cut with this block and so on per block you do...you should have 6 done up or you can wait to finish each seperately....
press seams...i turned my clock in the 7th picture when i took the picture...doesnt matter once it is sewn...just as long as you sew in order by pictures 1 thru 6...
watch the sizes of your materials and the placements before you sew..it is critical you keep this layout for the next parts....
DAY 3
CUTTING YOUR COLOR FABRICS...DEPENDING ON THE SIZE OF THE QUILT YOU ARE MAKING AND AMOUNT OF COLORS YOU ARE USING....(so if you are going to make all 12 blocks and you have the 6 colors cut 2 eachj per color..., you can cut more or less is you have colors you like or dislike...no set color code here)
GOING WITH YOUR COLOR MATCH AND HOWEVER MANY BLOCKS YOU WANT TO MAKE..
PER BLOCK CUT AS FOLLOWS...
COLOR 1:
1...4" X 4" SQUARE
1...4" X6 1/2" PIECE
1...4" X 10" PIECE
COLOR 2:
2...3" X 5 1/2" PIECES
2...3" X 10 1/2" PIECES
IF YOU HAVE FABRIC (WITH DEFINITE UP AND DOWN DESIGNS) THAT YOU ARE USING, YOU MAY WANT TO FOLLOW ALONG AS WE SEW BEFORE YOU START CUTTING ALL YOUR FABRIC UP...ONLY BECAUSE YOU POSITION YOUR BLOCKS AND YOU WANT THEM TO GO THE RIGHT WAY....so if you are the one with those fabrics please follow me as i post pictures for sewing so you can tell which way to cut your fabrics.and not scrap your materials
DAY 2
CUTTING YOUR WHITE (LIGHT FABRIC YOU CHOSE)..THIS WILL BE FOR 12 BLOCKS 16" EACH...PLEASE CUT FOR THE SIZE YOU ARE MAKING IT...
YOU WILL NEED:
12...3" X 16 1/2" STRIPS
12...3" X 14" STRIPS
24...4" X 4 1/2" PIECES
12...2" X 5 1/2" PIECES
12...2" X 4" PIECES...
SEPERATE INTO PILES (EASIER TO PUT SIZES WITH THEM...
from this picture below, you can see how i have chosen my 8 colors plus my white background
DAY 1-----CHOOSING YOUR MATERIALS...
SOLIDS/BATIKS/VERY FINE PRINTS WITH NO PATTERNS/POLK-A-DOTS ETC.. ARE ALOT EASIER TO WORK.
Looking at image 1, you see materials that are hard to match up to make it look like your squares...there is a definite pattern to these...IT IS DO-ABLE WITH PATIENCE AND THOUGHT.....
Image 2--you see fabrics that are much easier to match seams...if you look at the prints, they are small and cover the whole fabric, so no matter how you cut it, it will look like it goes together...not as much to worry over when sewn together...and easier
this whole quilt is mainly 1 block repeated 12 times...this make a very nice oversized lap quilt/twin....the more rows/blocks you add the bigger the quilt....
BACKGROUND FABRIC....CHOOSE A LIGHT COLOR (whites-very soft blues-creams-light pinks, whatever you choose for your main back...for a pretty good size quilt i used 3 yards for no seams in my borders and cutting pieces...again depends on your size of quilt...
SQUARES---you need 2 colors per block...i suggest 6 to 8 different colors...you DO NOT have to have so many if you are making baby size....try to pick colors that look good next to each other....for example (red & black) (red & light grey-black) (grey & black) variation of colors and prints gives you texture to your quilt.
this design was done with fat quarters...i used 1/2 yards of each for mine....for errors and all...
THIS QUILT COULD ALSO BE USED FOR USING UP YOUR SMALLER FABRIC STASHES...
