my rule of thumb - always leave a flower and if it touches your heart or soul leave a thank you
On other sites if you are a newbie and find free designs I would still say thanks. Something like Newbie here, thanks for the freebies I just found in the files. I try to thank everyone for a freebie or give a flower here. I don't always write it here but do give flowers.

Ok, my usual long answer, and this is only my OPINION, not 'site rules' or anything. For downloading freebies, I usually just leave a flower, but I don't have time to type comments in everything here. If you want to thank the digitizer on a newer post, I think that's great. The problem with thanking the digitizer on posts that are 2 years old or so is that quite often those people aren't even here any more to get your thanks. When a 'newbie' finds DBC, and goes thru old old posts, downloads 2 pages of designs and 'thanks' each one, then we have 2 pages of old designs before people can find the new ones posted just today or yesterday. Bringing an old design up is ok, especially if someone has been looking for it here in the community. And people might have been on vacation the week it was posted, and missed it. I would definitely read all the comments under an old design, however. When DBC was first started, there were a lot of newbies with new software who were told by salespeople they could just hit a button on their software and they'd have a design automatically. Uh, well, it doesn't work like that. It doesn't look too bad on the software screen, but the sew out is a disaster. There was a whole rash of these uploads to DBC for a while that were really not tested, and really no good as designs. It does drive me personally crazy to see these being brought forward occasionally, and people gushing about thanks, when I have posted repeatedly in the comments that the design is a disaster. It might be a language problem. So read, and know the digitizers. If you haven't seen anything from them recently, don't bring up a 3 year old post.
Projects has been the victim of spammers lately. They're dragging up old projects with a keyword like 'wedding' to post their website in the comments. If people don't look at the date of the post, they're congratulating someone on a wedding that took place 4 years ago, and then everyone keeps commenting on it over and over again, like it just happened. That IS irritating, because it's keeping today's projects down, giving more exposure to the spammer that brought it up in the first place. Unless there's a good reason to bring something forward, like someone in community looking for those directions in a project, leave a flower on the old ones & let it be.
In community posts, please read the date it was posted. The older ones are on the higher numbered pages. Just a personal example: in 2007 I posted about the death of my husband. Some two years later, some newbie found the post, didn't look at the date, and I had a whole rash of sympathy from other people two years after the fact from others who didn't look at the date. While I'm sure of everyone's good intentions, I really don't think anyone knows how that battered my soul, all over again. And posting that it was an old post didn't stop it, because nobody apparently read my answer. Less hurtful, but still silly, are the answers to where designs are a year after someone was looking for them. Or congratulations on the new baby that's a toddler now, & talking. It just clogs up the forum, to no good purpose. If people would just read the original post date, it would be good.
Again, this is just OPINION, not 'rules'. But I think this may be why you see some complaints in the comments. At least you read the comments to see the complaints. Hope this helps, hugs, Marji
I think some people forget that we were all "newbies" to this site at one time too-when we saw all the beautiful and creative designs by cuties and downloaded them-we more than likely said thank you too which brought them to the top-so what's old to those of us who have been here for years is new to someone just joining. It's actually a compliment to creators to bring older stuff back.
I agree to that, but others do not. I wanted to know which way the tide turned overall. Too bad I couldn't post a poll. I know that digitizers enjoy knowing that others like their work! Maybe that is all that matters....
I enjoy leaving a flower and a Thanx when I D/L someones gift to DBC. I know some get irratated, but I think that if I just needed that design, maybe someone else does also. My Mama taught me to always say "Thanx!!!" Hugs, Judy
I think people don't want to see the older "community" or "freebie" posts come to the top. So if a post is say a month or more old, just leave a flower as a thank you.
