I bought a new machine today...a Viking Topaz 20...I was thinking HUS,,,,,nope, VP3....got that settled.

Now.....do I have to use their thumb drive or can I use any? Can I use the prewound bobbins or do I have to do my own?

I will get a class or two ...but not until next week...

Thanks to everyone that posted...I got a stick with the machine...and I have a 1G stick that works...just didn't want to risk messing something up by putting in one that wasn't right.

I Have the Diamond and love it! Prewounds are all I use now, I hate to wind them, but I do if I need a specific color. You can use HUS VIP or VP3 designs, even Jef and Pes will work, but it prefers it's own formats! You can convert them if you want, but HUS and VIP will read just fine. BE SURE TO ONLY USEZ !G STICK! My dealer sent me one from CA to AL because I couldn't find one and dealer in AL closed. You can use the "approved Viking" or any other brand...but the machine tries to read all the info, and the larger sticks confuse the computer inside. I store all my designs on a 32G stick (with back up on external drive) and keep the 32 plugged into the laptop all the time. When I want to use a design or several folders of designs, I transfer them to the 1g stick and plug it in to the machine. Amazed at how many designs it will hold! Doesn't hamper me at all...beats d/l one at a time for the old D1! Congrats and enjoy, you will love it!

Well, you got your answers, but I wanted to congratulate you on your new machine! I always make my own bobbins, too, because I'm too cheap to buy them and it's easy. I also use the very fine lingerie thread 70wt for bobbin threads, and the prewounds have thicker thread. Let us know all the great things you make with your new baby! Hugs, Marji

Congratulations - I am a new Viking owner too, but my machine is still in the box - and it is my 5th Viking. And yes, you most certainly use another jump drive - I was told not to use anything larger than a 1G - it takes a long time to load om the machines. I am on the lookout for smaller drives, but it is hard to find them...I did get a few some time back that are only 128MB and use them more often. But, I do not store designs on my jumps - only use them for transporting files, or in my machine. I have always used the prewound bobbins, but have found that you should make sure to get the plastic type - the others do not work well. So I have a gross of bobbins that have cardboard sides, that I spin to bobbin..so that I don't waste. LOL Have fun with your new toy.

At one time ATW was running something where you could get the small jump drive. Look near the checkout in stores like Staples & sometimes they will have a 1G there.

Congratulations on your new machine! I have a Topaz 30 and can use my other thumb drives as well. Just remember to limit the files to 1 Mb.

I have never used prewound bobbins, so don't have experience with them.

Hugs, Lidia

I use another thumb drive, but try to get one no larger than 2 GB. They're hard to find, but they are out there. A larger one puts strain on your machine..so I've been told. Congrats & waiting to see some new projects!

Excellent! I would love to hear about the features of your machine, now that I know the jargon. Each manufacturer has a list of approved Flash (thumb)drives, however I am sure the ones you have will work fine.

Good for you! You can use prewound bobbins if you prefer. I used my own thumb drive when the original that came with had no space left. (Mine had the Christmas play on it.) It worked great.
