Fellow Cuties, and Quilters... Help.

I am making placemats as gifts without a pattern, which is crazy since I'm a beginner at quilting. I have made a sample block and it measures 8.5 inches and I want to make it on point... what size triangle do I need for the corners? My first block was way to big and thought of making another sample block which is much smaller and closer to the width of the placemat size.

So if there is a formula to figure out the triangle please pass it along, I'm sure this won't be the last block I make without a pattern.... my bad.

:)

Thanks in advance :)

You'll need to cut a square 7/8" larger than your 8.5" block then cut diagonally. Always use the 7/8" rule when making triangles that will fit with no hassle. Good luck and your placemats are going to be beautiful. Hugs Karen

Whoops made that sound like there was a ruler to use...dummy me. It's just a term "rule". Sorry if I confused you.

Love your block, where did the hummingbird come from? That's a lovely design. Did you know that Oregon PatchWorks has free block of the month quilting lessons? You just have to sign up with your e-mail, that's your password, and it's in the "members only" section. There's a bunch of different blocks there, they've been doing this for 2 years, I think. The lessons are PDF files, so you can download them and have them on your computer, or print them out, don't have to stay on line to do it. Best of luck, I think your placemats will be beautiful! Those are the colors in my kitchen, so of course I would think so, hee hee hee. Hugs, Marji

I could tell you but it would take more space than we have here so if you go to McCalls Quilting they have a wonderful lesson & chart you may download. If you just follow step by step you won't have any trouble. When you get to the site, click on "Lessons" then scroll down to "Setting blocks on point". This will get you a square, if you want a regular size placemat you will have to add some borders. Good luck!
