I would cut a pice, measure it, wash it and then remeasure, and at least you will know if it is going to shrink. I would overlock or zig zag around the sides first.
Hugs Pam.

and the debate goes on...wash or not? I do not wash if all my fabrics are quilting cotton...

1. Modern fabrics no longer have the formaldehyde.
2. As all previous cuties have said; wash or not is a choice but Harriet Hargrave in all of her quilting books says it is best not to wash BUT if some of the fabric for a quilt has been washed, then to wash it all and starch.

I read in an older sewing magazine that some fabrics have formaldehyde in them and may cause health problems. This may be outdated, but I would rather not take the chance, so I wash my quilt fabrics before I use them.

All my fabric goes right from the shop to the washing room, no visits in the sewing room - unwashed 8-) Laundering them like I would the finished projekt. Can you cut it up smaller for easy ironing? Have fun whatever is good for you. But beware even some very high price quilterscotton bleed out overdyed color.
Good luck with your quilt.

Ah, the two quilting camps - to wash or not to wash. Here is what I decided after over a decade of quilting. IF I am using 100% quilters cotton THROUGHOUT, I do not wash. The sizing in the fabric makes it easier to cut and sew. IF I am using a variety of fabrics, I wash it all, iron and heavily starch. That makes it easier to cut and sew. You are about to spend a sizable amount time on this large quilt, why tempt fate for this shortcut? My humble opinion only. ;)

I would wash and iron best. What not to do for sure
is use different fabric types and wash some and not others because then when you do wash your finished item it will distort. Ask me how I know....

Better to wash, dry and iron than be sorry.

I always wash, a quilt is a lot of work to chance it being ruined. After washing and drying, I just set up the ironing board in front of the tv and iron away.

No. I never sash anything that is not dirty or soiled. Only material that I am really not sure if it is colourfast will be washed. Enjoy making your quilt.****

I've learned the hard way. I didn't wash a T-shirt I embroidered for my grandson. When it was washed, it shrunk. I now always wash my fabric first unless it is dry-clean only. Charla

Most of the time NO I have worked with luxury fabrics
but would only wash something that might run or shrink.

I agree with the others. I would certainly wash. Too terrible to put in a lot of work only to find that with the first wash it shrinks. I also wash my fabric as soon as I buy it. Sarah.

I wash everything that is washable as soon as I get the fabric home. This way I know everything on my shelves is ready to use when I want to use it.

I wash everything. Yep Iron it also! I think it is imperative to get all the factory chemicals off before it gets worked or goes into the stash. Live Laugh Download Stitch!

would you wash in one peice or cut in half june

toet by toet 05 Sep 2012

I would wash in one piece,if you have a clothsline i would peg to the out side working my way around, you will need someone to help you. If not,use your dryer, remome the fabric while hot and fold strait away.

Sorry, remove the fabric while hot and fold straight away. When ironing i have a sheet on the floor.

I wash in one piece and then depending on time go right to the ironing board. If I can do it outside or in the dryer then I try to pull it while it is still damp.
