We had an earthquake here this afternoon.

Well it was actually 60 km offshore, nearly 50 km south of us and measured 3.2.
But we felt it here, the whole house felt like it was hit by a semi trailer, or an underground explosion.
It was quite worrying because we didn't know what it was. Ray thought I was fooling around moving his chair from behind (as I am known to do, NOT! LOL!!) but I said it could have been an earthquake. And sure enough it was.
I don't think there was any damage or injuries, as it didn't even warrant a mention on the Sydney TV News.

So that was what it was,it was just loud thud that shook our house.Newcastle earthquake you could hear coming like a lge truck thundering down the street.
The 1994 earthquake was louder too,our house was being demolished when that one hit about 8pm & it wasn't mentioned on the news that night

So we share an experience Lillian?
I always knew we were kindred spirits.:-) My only other earthquake jolt, I, too, was on the loo and the radio was playing "I Feel the Earth Move Under my Feet" I kid you not, I swear it is true! hugs, Meg

I know about those jolts..used to live on the B.C. coast for 30+ years! (would you believe 10 yrs in Sidney) They can be very scary. I'm glad it wasn't a "Baddie".

When your not used to the jolts they are jarring but us oldies from Southern California take those in stride. It matters how close to the epicenter or fault you are and how deep or shallow the earthquake is as to how much you feel and not just the number.
Lots of earthquakes and hurricaines going on.

oh dear, if you felt it this way from a distance of 50 km., how would it be for the people that live in the specific area of an earthquake? must be scary!

I live in So California and the San Andreas fault runs deep through So Cal...I've been through more than my share...last BIG one was 1994 and it was a 7.1 that was centered about five miles from our home...we never get use to them, but we get them fairly often, but mostly they are under 5.0 and don't really cause much damage...keeping my fingers crossed! Glad all is good where you are with no damage and no injuries...

Earthmoving Meg....hmmmmmm maybe. Glad that there are no injuries or damage. We had 2 (maybe3) here and one of them shook me awake and cracked the header going from my bedroom into the master bath- it was terrifying and I was so happy it didn't last long

Glad no damage was done. I don't think of Australia as being earthquake country, but when the house starts to shake, you figure it out pretty quick!

It was offshore of Woy Woy Chris but was only minor. I don't think it was felt farther north than here. Didn't even rate a mention on Sydney news. We did have a 12 y.o. boy arrested for setting a fire in bushland at Wyong. Burnt out 80 hectares & closed the freeway for several hours. It's all good now so pls don't worry. hugs n love, me

The house filled up with smoke last night when I left the door open so the dog could use the doggy door

meganne by meganne 11 Sep 2012

Yes, I hope they punish the little delinquent and not just give him a rap on the knuckles. He actually broke into a house to STEAL the accelerants so it was pre-meditated destruction.

I had to search the internet for information after Ray phoned & told me it WAS an earthquake. I never thought to turn on the local radio, but then I was really tired from driving to Sydney & back & just wanted to lay down & sleep.

More an anxious one as we didn't know what it was until Ray heard it on the local radio news. Funny thing was, at first I thought it was a huge gust of wind, as we have had house shaking winds here lately and when I looked out the window it was dead calm. Eeerie. LOL!!

Than you Dee. That's the second small quake I've experienced and I would hate to suffer a larger one. I don't know how people can live on the big fault lines, it must be truly terrifying.
