Ladies, as one who has worked in the IT industry let me advise you that you should be backing up your files to a portable/external hard drive at least twice a week, depending on how much ....

Meg, thank you - my daughter is in the IT industry, too! I do follow the rules - when it comes to my PC. *4U

Well this is one time when a daughter should be her Mum's teacher. So aren't you the lucky one. hugs n roses, M

That's a great idea if you have access to that. You can never take TOO much care. hugs n roses, M

I always turn my monitor off and leave the comp on. can let it go to sleep. virus checks scheduled daily .. do my defrags (harder to figure out on this crazy vista). When I got my first comp I would always turn on and off and burnt the hard drive with in a year doing so. I am sew happy I have saved all my designs on CD/DVD. Am burning a DVD right now.. 2nd try?!?! *4U ><>

You should disable the SLEEP feature, I believe it's even harder on the machine than turning off. Do you need assistance with your DVD burning? Don't forget you can ZIP your design folders if they are too large to store. hugs, Meg

.... work you do on them, and let's face it we do download a lot of designs each day and probably store a lot of other important work on them, especially family photo's. Besides back ups you should always copy important files onto cd's or better still DVD's since they hold more. A piece of advice my workmate computer technicians always told me:- "it is best to leave your pc ON all the time and just turn off your monitor/screen each night" this does not apply to laptops/notebooks. My pc is never off and I schedule backups, virus scans, defrags, etc for that period at night when i am sleeping. I hope this info will help save someone else from heartache. hugs n roses to all, Meganne

All those saving energy tips tell you to up it off as leaving it on might cost so many dollars a year. But I'd rather pay that amount, hidden in the rest of the bill, than shorten the life of my pc. So thanks for the warning Meganne
