My guestion. What would you advise for an Emb. writer that I can get my designs from here and other sites to my computer, perfer FREE.
My son in law got me one for my old XP and I have no idea how he did it.
Any help or suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you all so much.

sandyqueen and anangel,

Thanks. I really think the Unzip thing is what he used but he doesn't remember. He is coming tomorrow so I will ask him.

Now all I need to do is find out if my Mini Amazing box will work with the new computer. I use that to print out templates as my little 780D doesn't do that. I really do not want to spend any more money on software..... Need that $ for new emb. designs! Ha Ha

Artlink also prints out designs and you have multiple brands of hoops to pick from (hopefully the one for your machine.

Ask son in law what he got you. You just go to favorite sites, find design, get to design format your machine uses and click (my format is ART) and follow save instructions. I always save to folder with design site name CUTE folder for this site. Then I can copy to USB stick.

If you want to look at designs Bernina has a free ARTLINK PROGRAM (Bernina.com) that lets you see the design, change size, mirror horizontal or vertical, and rotate. I'm lucky it will send design to my computer. This program allows me to send designs directly to my embroidery machine thru a USB cable.
You can open and view in the following formats.
ART (4versions)
ART x stitch
Pes
Ped
XXX
Hus
Pec
Pcd
Pcm
Pcq
Pcs
Emd
Shv
Emd
Gnc
Vp3
Vip
Sew
Exp
Dst

You can load and view an Exp (or any of the listed formats) file and save it to any of the other formats shown above. Very handy program, and best of all FREE.

MJDG,
Try www.winzip.com/free! This program will extract the files from the zipped folders for you! Hope this helps.

Windows7 and Windows8 have a built in UNZIP. Right click on zip file name and click Extract, Make sure to open zip to proper directory.

MJDG,
Are you asking how to get the designs from your computer to your embroidery machine?? Any reader/writer software you had with the old XP, could also be downloaded to a new computer, I would think. If your machine loads a design directly from the computer, rather than a reader/writer chip, then just plugging your machine to a USB slot on the new computer should work.
When, we purchased a new computer (Vista7) a while back, I put the old XP that had all my designs in my sewing room for easy access. As I no longer have internet service on the old XP, I now download designs to the new computer, then burn the designs to a CD to put on the old XP. My machine is a Brother that requires a reader writer software, so I use the Vikant Ultimate Box to transfer designs. I love The Ultimate Box as it holds a lot of designs, compared to other reader/writer software.
Not sure if this is what you are asking...... I do not know of any free reader/writer software, but there are several free programs that allow you to open and view designs you have downloaded to your computer. Perhaps someone else can be of more help and give you these sites, if that is what you need.
Hugs, Angel

No, I need to know how to get the designs to my computer from the sites. Right now I click PES and download, it goes to Zip, I click agree, extract and it goes to a folder on my desktop.
Once they are on my computer, I know how to get them to my emb. machine. I use a USB stick.
I hope that makes sense. I have a MINI AMAZING BOX that works with my XP... but am not able to get designs through that. That is all the software I have.
