The knitting experts: I would like to know if someone can help me. I don't know much about knitting, but am making a very simple afghan pattern. I was taught years ago to add 4 extra stitches. You always start with knit 2, do the pattern stitches and end with knit 2. My problem is my end stitches are always really loose. How can I get them tighter so it looks nicer.

Thank you for any help I can get.
Can you see what I am meaning in the picture. Sorry its a little blurry, I tried a few times. It doesn't seem to matter what size needles I use. I start out casting on so tightly, then end up so loose.

Slip the first stitch of every row, knit to the end of the row.My mum taught me this and it gives a lovely finish on the edge.Try this on a small sample piece and see how it turns out.

I will try this on my next afghan, I am making 7 of them for next Christmas, this is #4. Thank you for your advise.

Jerri, if I have had uneven stitches on the ends of my pieces, I will take a crochet needle and crochet around the edges after the piece is done....it neatens it up and looks more finished.......

Hi Vickie, Thank you, I do this for crocheting. I make the dishcloths, but crochet them instead of knit. They are so much stronger and last alot longer. I do crochet around the edge of them as well.

If you have the next smaller size needle you could knit off the last two and first two stitches. Otherwise try to hold the yarn with the same tension as you are for the middle stitches.

Another good idea, thank you. I am using circular needles for the first time, but have smaller regular needles to try this out.

The best way I've found Jerri is to knit into the back of the stitch, that's always been good for me. Love and blessings Chris

Thank you Chris. I do it this way, when I make my dishclothes, gives a ribbed look and makes them thicker and stronger. I will try this on another afghan. Don't want to change things now or it will show up.
