I have used Dupioni silk for a few projects now. Washed all of them, and they turned out great. I was afraid at first, but after getting a spot on the first one and thinking it was ruined, I thought I had nothing to lose by washing it. Initially, I only wet the area around the spot, but that left a water ring. So I ended up washing the entire piece, and ironing it from the backside while still slightly damp. Worked just fine for me.
I don't know what the name of the material will be in South Africa. I have already asked for it at some of the shops and then they look blankly at me. I hope you make a huge success of this project. I look forward to seeing it on projects. Love and best wishes. Susie.
Thankyou Susie, maybe if you can explain to the people in the shops that silk is made by silkworms. hugs Heather
Sounds really ambitious using Silk Dupioni...perhaps you should try a small cutwork piece to see how much fraying there is and how it washes with WSS...before you venture on....
Thankyou dragonflyer,Tomorow I will try a few samples on my two embroidery machines, then make a decision on the direction that I shall take and the machine that I shall use. I have some frey stoppa,I don't like it too much. I bought the silk on a sale some time ago, hopefully it will be ok for the tablerunner. The design is a lot of cutwork motives tacked together with an insert in the center. I have plenty of ironaway, don''t think the hot iron will be good for the silk, and the tearaway may pull on the stiches. It looks like WSS may be my only option. I'm off to bed its 1am in Australia. hugs Heather
Wow dupion silk and cutwork, you really are game...I have sewn this fabric and it frays a lot...so good luck with your project. Look forward to seeing it finished....what colour did you buy?
Hi kezza2sew, I have one and a half yds of ivory,it should look stunning on my timber table. The fraying could be a problem,I will starch it first, keep my fingers crossed. I should learn to up load into projects,I see so many nice things there. He he
I have not had a look at the site that Chris has recommended but if you use cold water on the silk to wash out the WSS it should not be a problem. Why don't you try soaking a bit of the silk and WSS and see what happens. It would be such a shame to ruin the material. Let us know how it goes. Sarah.
That is a good plan, shall try that first. There will be lots of little bits left over, need to put my thinking cap on to find a use for them. thankyou Sarah.
Hi Heather, I had a look on Google and there is some great information on Urban threads about using Silk Dupioni. Good luck, love and blessings Chris
Thankyou chris, what a great link, you always come to my rescue,I think it will take some time to do all the hoopings. hugs Heather
