Stitching a cross stitch design on aida cloth.

I wanted to find out how hard it would be to stitch on aida. The digitising required exact measuring of the size of the stitches and a bit of arithmetic. And when stitching hooping straight and careful placement is of the utmost importance.
I had a piece of aida where I had stitched out samples in the past (seeing the colours it must date back to the seventies) and I digitised one of the P's and stitched it. It looks almost right. Size of a cross stitch can only be set in tenths of mm, I would have needed hundredths to get it perfect.
Picture 1 the front, picture 2 detail.

The back is another matter even when I never bothered too much about the back of the samples. I had the machine set to cutting the jumps which made a mess at the back and the stabiliser spoils it all - see picture 3.

Your letters look perfect to me. I don't usually use aida cloth but I did many years ago when Brother put out their first cross stitch set with letters included. I put them on the Charles Craft bibs which had a strip at the bottom for embroidery and most people thought they were hand stitched. I did not use stabilizer on them, they sewed nicely. The harder part was getting the cloth exactly set into the hoop so that it stitch aligned as you are working to achieve. Aida cloth pulls so easily and is tricky to get set perfectly in the hoop.

I have put some pretty letters on linen fabric, they turn out very pretty and look hand sewn. They were a free set from several years ago.

Martine this is one thing I will not be trying, so good for you for having the patience..looks like you have it down pat to me...I love cross stitch, but too time consuming don't even do it in machine embroidery..so take my hat off to those who do.....

Wow, Wow,Wow.. Wonderful examples. I have wondered if Xstitch designs would stitch out on aida cloth. Really appreciate all your picts, front and back and the close up. But think will continue to do Xst by hand for the relaxation unless I decided to try a fine linen or close even weave cotton as you suggested. Really appreciate your comment and sharing. Thank you

I think that you did a wonderful job Martine, & I agree about the stabilizer too. It is painstaking work to be sure & we can always count on your designs being top-notch! hugs Loralye

Look good to me! I don't like the auto jump stitch feature. I usually have it turned off. Too messy on the back & sometimes it will catch up the cut thread too. Have used several different machines with it & they all do the same thing.

Looks good. I recently tried to do a cross stitch pattern for a book marker by placing it on aida cloth. It was very difficult to get it lined up. I was off just a bit. It still looked ok. I pinked the edges around the outside so it didn't show up that bad. I usually use felt to do them but they are a bit thick for book markers and just wanted to see if I could do it.

Maybe a larger cross stitch would be easier to line up on aida cloth that has a lower thread count, these tiny ones were a bit difficult - my eyesight is not what it was a couple of decades ago.

I wonder if you use WSS if it would make the back look better. Is that worth trying.

I've done that on towels. It's the not-connected stitches being automatically cut that give trouble.

Well, I would not try this in a hurry, rather sew on something easier.
Are you trying the cross stitch module yet?

Quite a challenge you gave yourself, with good results; much too daunting for me...

I know you would try something like this yourself as soon as you had the cross stitch module. We like to test our ideas and theories, don't we.

Having done masses of hand x stitch over the years, you have done a remarkable effort with your machine. I take my hat off to you (if I was wearing one)!!!! Sarah.

I just had to try at least once. I hardly ever used the x stitch module because I love to do it by hand, although I could do with a magnifying glass nowadays :)

You amaze me! I didn't think it was possible to get cross-stitch to look this close to handmade. Perhaps if you sent your photo in to the software company, they might provide an update to allow the perfection you desire.

Thank you. I don't think Husqvarna would bother. Should they do it, it would most likely come as an expensive upgrade :).

Looks darn good! Did you starch the aida cloth first? Did you use a ball point needle?

Thank you. I did starch it and stretch it so the threads were straight before I pressed it dry I used an embroidery needle with an all-purpose point.

I have always wanted to try this but I don't digitize so would just have to try someones elses crosstitched design. way to go.

In that case I think the only thing you can do is make a test stitch, measure 10 crosses and see if that would fir any linen or aida. But personally I prefer an even weave coton or fine linen and would not bother with the stuff meant for hand embroidery. It may have stitched in 3 minutes, preparation took far longer.
