FYI - recently a Cutie wrote that she has transferred all her over 4000 designs to a couple of USB flash drives.I was envious and told my son tonight I was going to get some large capacity ones to do this. He works in the accounting business and transfers files with USB flash drives on a regular basis. He said that they are great for transferring files from one computer to another but are notorious for failing after a period of time and are not intended for long time storage. Just thought I would pass this on for whatever it is worth.

Well, phooey!
I think I am the one you're talking about that stored their 4000 designs on USB drives. My computer tech said that is the way to go. I may still invest in an external hard drive. I have over 4000 emb. designs now but I have 8000 pictures on USB drives. We are in the process of converting all our old slides into HD pics and would not want to lose all those treasures.
Maybe I'll try the DVD's too. I have a lot on CD's but they don't hold much.
Question..... Do you make the DVD just like you do the CD or does it take something extra . I have a new computer w/ Windows 7 and haven't tried t make a DVD on it. My old XP would not do DVD's.

We still have an XP so I cannot answer, but surely another Cutie will.

It works just like a CD. It just holds more data. Send me a PM if you have trouble. Back-ups are best kept in two or more places.

I have had two USB's failing on me the past month. I have fortunately backed up on my computer and DVD' s . I still like my designs easily accessable and like the USB for that. I mark them and print out what is on them, so that I know exactly what I am looking for. It works for me. I admit not knowing very much about computers, and this is what I taught myself over the past four years. Thanks, also with tips from my Cutie friends/family. hugs.

True. It may seem like overkill, but I save my designs on cds first. Then copy the cds onto a 2T external drive. The ones I buy, and important ones from good designers are saved on my hard drive, which goes on a backup external drive that automatically updates what is on the computer. And I had to get an external cd/dvd drive, so I am now also making dvds! Might take me a while to discover what I want to find sometimes, but I will be able to.
And...I have folders of the the design groups I sew out on the machine. Since I have taken tthe time to change color, or resize, or otherwise tweak them and group them, I figure I might as well save them. Plus, I keep copies of the cds at another location.

Thank you. It reinforces what I have been trying to tell Cuties for years.
The best storage for designs is rewritable DVD's, formatted for data they will hold the equivalent of about 7 CD's and they are so inexpensive you can afford to make several copies and keep them in different places, such as another family member's or a friend's.
Just don't forget where you stashed them.

They come apart easy also. I have one USB flash drive that is taped together but still works. I have mine backed up on an external hard drive and put the ones I purchase and most favorite ones on my husbands computer for more backup. Also, have most on DVD's as they hold more data than a CD. There are internet places that you can pay a fee to store all your files and be able to access them from anywhere.

But online storage sites are notorious for closing down unexpectedly leaving their patrons with NO access to their valuable files stored there. hugs, Meg

Thanks. I didn't know about this issue with them. Have never used any of them so will remember,

USB drives really can't be trusted over time. But, they are really great for transferring files. Just never trust them to be your only backup :=)
