Just do a test and you will only have wasted a little time, it just seems hard because you have not tried!;)

Welcome to the 'Cute' family, Susan. You have already been given some good advice here. I have done some applique designs. I use double-sided applique paper on the fabric that is being appliqued and after I have trimmed, but before the satin-stitch, I use a mini-iron to carefully iron it on. This helps to get a nice clean edge. You can also iron once the design is finished. Hope this makes sense and helps you. *4U

I was very dubious about applique too. Bunnycup.com has some great applique designs, but once I read her applique tutorial on her website, which was so easy to follow, I thought I woud brave it. Very easy, just practice so you get good at trimming close to the stitching on the fabric you attatch to the base fabric. I was a bit frightened to trim too close so have little fringes coming out of my satin stitching, but after a couple of tries, I have it sorted. I say, get brave and go for it.

Applique would be cute on you grand children's things. Embroidery library has you cutting each applique piece out and then laying down to stitch, but one of my instructors said to lay a piece of applique fabric down before the outline. Stitch the outline then trim away with applique scissors carefully. Remove the hoops from the machine but do not unhoop. Slide it back under presser foot and continue with the satin stitch. It works!!! Experiment both ways and you will decide which works best for you.

Embroidery Library has lots of tutorials, including applique. It is very simple if you buy an applique design. You can find the tutorial in the projects section of EL. This is the the home site address. http://www.emblibrary.com Good luck!
